  1. I'll be working the next two weekends so my bike training is about done, going to try and get to the gym and go for a run a couple of times a week work permitting. I always do as little as possibe the week before and start loading carbs as soon as I get to the Fort. I normally find Stella quite effective as its in liquid form....... looking forward to it now whatever the weather

A rather younger Mr Birkett has ridden an Ossa before in the early 70's Big John may be able to confirm the year as I think he rode it in the SSDT
  3. thats one of the bad bits I looked at one recently and on full lock the fork or yoke makes contact with the top of the radiator before anything else. thats not good.
  4. where there any hills in the colmore ?
  5. there may be some mild pee taking in this thread of my local community. However Mr Grieg has actually improved........ I have rarely been as insulted as when he referred to Cota Kid as a Geordie the blokes from teeside for heavens sake !
  6. Hi well as nobody else is feeling very friendly welcome to the site. loads of info on here on the different bikes I dont live far from Newcastle so can advise on clubs / dealers / where to ride
  7. Have you checked the float height ? also try cleaning the in line filter thats in the carb body where the fuel hose connects. As motomerlin said you dont need to spend
  8. Just did mine last weekend as you have described with a heat gun but didnt freeze the bearing as it has a rubber oring around the outside. Mines a newer model so yours may not have the rubber o ring. On mine there was only a seal on the ignition side so put that in first, then warm the case from the other side and tap in the bearing with a socket on the bearing outer edge.
  9. I think your maybe starving the bike of fuel at high rpm you drain the bowl on delorto as it doesnt fill very quickly. for last years ssdt I fitted a 300 float valve to stop this happening on the fast tracks. bear in mind the main jet feds via the drain bolt, the pilot jet will be higher and this may explain why it pinks when you shut off after a long climb. I doubt its mechanical on an 09
  10. you dont want to be sayin much Ishy I saw your seat and wellies last time......
  11. Corryaraick Pass is a fantastic hour or two on a bike, its all track work from memory
  12. Hi Double A You dont have to ride a gas gas and yes grip is important in ssdt. Many of the sections require just the correct amount of speed and dont require a lot of power ( why have i got a 280 Gas Gas again ??), if your speed is right you go over the holes rather than in to them, if your too fast you keep having to pull the clutch and apply the brakes which doesnt work very well on loose rocks. Try and practice riding without the clutch or using less clutch. To make your bike grip better you could try a thicker base gasket, a flywheel weight or a slow throttle (black tube domino). The slow throttle is the easiest to fit and makes a lot of difference. if you can afford to I would buy a new bike, its a long way to travel so you dont want to have to retire. If you bring your current bike you need to prepare it well. Be aware that your bike is going to do between 400 and 500 miles over the six days so you need new wheel bearings, disc pads, chain, sprockets, tyres etc and your engine needs to be in good condition. keep the questions coming and I'll try and reply faster next time !

hey justin when you going to get round to changing the original post ???
  14. I think they probably are a little over priced at the minute. However punctuation is free which would make your rant a little easier to read
  15. One idea is if Gas Gas are trying to shift units it would have been better to do a 125 and a 250 or 280. The 300 looks great but unfortunately too much grunt for me, and i dont really want a 125
  16. yes 41t is standard, thats what my 09 came with last year
  17. cheers Kinnel I'm on there 2003 was a bad year for weather, and I rode 2009 was a bad year for weather and I rode I have an entry for 2010......

your not trying to tell me the most reliable well built high tec trials machine in the world still isnt fixed are you ? its a chew on when any bike plays up really good luck Justin
  19. Double A this is what I was referring to in the other thread, it will give you a good insight into the trial. Beunos nochas !
  20. At the SSDT there are a number of loose rocky climbs such as Laggan Lochs and Ben Nevis were 2nd with 11/42 is ideal based on my bike last year. For the majority of sections I found first was enough though. Better riders than me (theres plenty) can ride a lot of the sections is second with 11/42 but you can only ride at the speed your ability allows. look in the SSDT forums on here for the videos released of last years trial. its probably worth getting a video of the trial then you can get an idea of the sections you will encounter.
  21. There are a whole list of possibilities here first point without wanting to appear cheeky (who me ) is that a 300 raga is not a good choice for a beginner, especially in slippery conditions. second is the rear suspension too hard ? there should be some sag in the shock in my opinion so try backing off the spring if there isnt. third detune the bike, Do the cheap things first, fit a slow throttle, peel the grip back on your throttle and it will probably be white which is quick action. A slow throttle is a black tube and makes a lot of difference. You can also buy from Gas Gas uk a flywheel weight, a spacer for the cylinder head and a thicker base gasket, all of these things will make the pick up softer when you open the throttle what cc are your friends betas ?
  22. i think a good comprimise will be to set our bikes up as we like them
  23. 11/42 gearing is what I run for the rest of the year so I'm not gearing up. But its worth saying that when I tried 10/42 i rode most sectiions in second, it feels like 2nd gear with 10/42 is higher than 1st in 11/42. so if your ridig every section in second as Double A mentioned surely you may as well gear up and use first in the sections ?
  24. 1) what cc is your Gas Gas ? I use 11 / 42 on a 280 Gas Gas and find 1st is enough for most sections, this allows a reasonable speed on the road without being to hard on your engine. 2) Ride at a speed you are comfortable, too fast and you will get tired more easily and are likely to crash. Dont spend too long looking at the sections. 3) Observing may be more strict than you are used to but the sections may also be more natural so you will not need to stop and correct as much, many of the streams (creeks) are quite wide. 4) yes you should practice no stop and get into the habit of not stopping. 5) You can buy a large tank from trialandendurodirect.com, I managed without one last year but I had a dellorto carb, if you use a keihin you may need the bigger tank. The bigger tank will allow you to get lost and still make it to the next fuel control so is less risky. 6) You must use a rear number plate again see trialandendurodirect.com 7) Scotland has varied weather, sometimes its very nice but often it is cold and wet. Bring plenty of gear and I would recommend goretex or similar clothing over your trial gear on the bad days, always carry waterproofs in your rucksack as the weather changes quickly. Enjoy !
