Youth Trials

There sure are a lot of cheap xr70s etc out there. Anybody go old school and adapt one for a beginner trialer? It seems to me like the venerably TY80 wasn't far from a trail bike. I'm a pretty good welder so I'm not afraid to move pegs or even change neck angle. Just looking to give an 8-year-old a bit of a feeling of a trials bike on a budget. It seems to me a grunty 4 stroke would be a good introduction.

Hello, I hope this is the correct sub-forum to post this question. I'm the mechanic for my son's 2007 Gas Gas TXT 70 trials bike. The engine is kind of a one-off in that it was made by Franco Morini. The engine is 72cc (47mm x 40mm stroke) liquid cooled with a hydraulic clutch. I believe the engine derived from the Franco Morini MC65. The cylinder is an iron bore unit from Metrakit. I could not ID the piston. I am hoping to over-bore the cylinder to 80cc (50mm x 40mm stroke). One piston which "looks" reasonable is the Polini 204.0829A. On February 10, 2009, a new law called the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act went into effect. This law was created by Congress last August as a knee-jerk reaction to hazardous toys being imported from China (remember the Fisher-Price toy recalls). It bans all products sold for use by children which contain above certain levels of lead and phthalates. In the act, children is defined as anyone 12 or under, and the law is very broad in that it exempts no products from its purview. How does this become an issue of importance to motorcycle riders? Just checked the ACU list for the A and B class nationals and it seems we will be back at Bracken Rocks in May. I've never seen two National events at the same venue in the same year before and is surely overkill? On the Plus side Scarborough's excellent IRC trial has made it into the list.

Hi, My 6 year old son is very keen on Trials, and I am looking to buy a bike in the spring. He has not ridden a motorcycle before, so I am thinking about looking at an auto (e.g Beta minitrial). Has any one got any advice regarding these bikes, and there suitability for use in competition. I know the traditional route for youngsters was with the TY 80, but my son has set his heart on a more "modern" looking bike, like the ones Dougie rides! Whilst he is 6 years old he has the height and build of an 8 year old, so I dont want a bike he will grow out of too soon. Hi guys I'm looking for a helmet for my 4yr old son ... His head size at 55cm is big enough for a S or XS adult lid but I was worried it might be a bit heavy for him ...been looking at the Spada and Wulf lids ... Can anyone recommend a lid that they have used with a child of same age Thanks Phil

Are their any modification anyone has done on their Beta 80 to make it handle or ride any better.

I'm looking to get my 8yr old son his first bike. I'm keen on an electric bike as I hope he'll get more use of it, due to it being quiet, and I hope he'll take to it better than a bike with a clutch. Can some one please advise the difference between the Beta and the Oset 20. I'd probably go for the Oset Eco, rather than the Racing. Cheers

Hi First post.... We have a Beta 50 2002 mini trial rev and go, now has new clutch with new springs but will not tick over at low revs, (same with old clutch) stalls constantly when revs drop, or we turn tick over up high and bike gets to hot. I guess this is due to lack of flywheel on mx engine. Any fixes /advice please, my son is fed up stalling in sections, and I am fed up starting it!

Hi all. Looking to move my boy up from an Oset onto a petrol bike, mainly because he's outgrowing it fast, also because the hassle of being in the middle of a wood when the batteries run out is p***ing me off! if I go petrol the only option seems to be a beta 50 or 80. I know they don't make the 50 now, so a few questions. 1. Is there any other option bar a beta? 2. Is the 50 with a clutch and 4 speed a proper trials engine as the twist and go versions were little ktm units? am I better going straight to a medium wheel 80? Yes, he's only 7 but he is a big strong lad for his age and towers over his oset 20! Thankyou all!

My 7 yr old son is new to trials and we got him a Beta 50 to start with. Problem we are having is he is a pretty aggressive rider for his age/size and keeps spinning the rear wheel and causing his tube valve to leak/break. Any advise on how to fix this? I am wondering if their is another type of tire to use or a trick to help? I know he will need to move up someday but I'm thinking to move up to an 80 would be too big a step at this point....? Any thoughts ideas? Or am I going to be buying stock in tubes?

Hi, I'm having real trouble trying to back bleed the clutch on my son's 2009 Beta 80. I've used this method before on other bikes and have had no problems at all. There seems to be a problem at the master cylinder, because when I removed the brake line from the master cylinder I could see a nice flow of fluid coming out of the end of the line - when pumping through with the syringe - from the nipple at the slave cylinder. When it's connected back up, nothing is coming through. I believe the technique is to leave the lever released while back bleeding - which is what I am doing. Our little un is getting on great with his 2008 beta 80 and i have'nt had any problems with the bike apart from the carbaration. I cant seem to get a consistant set up. Everytime i think its right it goes pear shaped. occasionally the bike races on tick over, occasionally suffers fuel starvation in a sections and has to be started on choke half way through a trial it then runs ok. To be fair if i clean the carb after every ride its better, but i cant help thinking, im missing something. I am using a 66:1 mix as recommended in the handbook and putoline oil and standard unleaded re-routed the throttle cable etc. Does anyone whos had beta 80's for a while have any ideas. Che…

Anybody ever tried converting the beta 80 to a flatslide carb I.E Keihin, OKO etc??? I think the bike would run cleaner on a better carb, we bought my son his new 2017, its never run brilliantly, often fuelling up and idle seems to vary. I know the smaller cc bikes will suffer with pilot jets blocking up because by nature the hole is very small. However Ive had to clean out the carb much more often than on any other bike and also play with the needle height, mixture screw etc to try and retain a decent smooth running. Surely the top lads on these bikes cant have these issues? Do the likes of Hemmingways have modified bikes? or did we just get the Frida…

My son got his first petrol trials bike 2 months ago, I was lucky enough to find a Beta Evo 80 SW. One month ago we had our bikes stolen from my garage, my Gas Gas and my sons Beta. My question that I'm hoping someone can help with is: I'm having real trouble finding another 2nd hand Beta Evo 80 SW. But, I do see quite a few BW's. Although he's too small for the BW yet is the only difference between a SW and a BW the rim sizes? If so does anyone know if I can just buy a BW and re-rim and spoke the wheels to a small wheel size until his legs grow a bit? Thanks in advance for any help. Dave

Started to have an issue with my son's Beta EVO 80 and the fuel tap not always turning out fully. Just wondered if anyone has managed to fit a better fuel tap? Cheers
