Spent most of this Summer rebuilding a 1986 Honda TLR200 and now I'd like to learn to ride it. My practice area is my back yard for now. I put on about 8 miles this weekend tooling around the yard but mostly I'm making this up as I go. Here is my first question: How much is the throttle used for level riding. That is, do you have your idle set higher so you can leave the throttle be and use the clutch/brake to control speed?

Hi all, I'm currently converting an old Honda farm bike to trials form. The bike is a monoshock but as the linkage assembly was badly seized up and made from steel I had to cut it to disassemble. The shock unit is also quite heavy so will be chucked away. Some advice wanted please; what would be a good setup to use/modify? I was thinking direct mount so as to avoid clearance issues with linkage. Cheap and commonly available would be ideal. If I used a shock designed for linkage, would I get enough rear wheel wheel travel? I know there's lots of variables: mounting position relevant to swingarm pivot, swingarm length, angle of shock etc. I'm thinking a…

I wonder if you could help me resolve a problem with Bill Beveridge I contacted him in March as regards his 4 plate Clutch Conversion Uses standard drum and hub. No slipping and lighter action. For Triumph Tiger Cub.http://www.trialscub...sion/4556577547 We operate a service exchange system on your existing friction plates, send us 3 good condition surflex plates, we will machine to thickness and supply the 4th friction plate and 4 steel plates - £70 plus postage. It was easier for me to get 3 Surflex clutch plates from Greystones and arrange for them to send to Bill. As I now live New Zealand I have since had the last email 19.04.12 Yes but I needed 4? Regards Bill…

Hi, final had time over Christmas to spend time with the Cota. Everything including carb and motor have been stripped and replaced with new parts. However, there seems to be no fuel getting through. Good spark and compression, but not the slightest glint of it starting. Any ideas?

I wonder if anyone has ever fitted a Mikuni VM22 to a Villiers 7E spec motor. I was prompted when my 3rd and last Villiers S24 Concentric showed hairline cracks. I had a VM22 handy and a hose to couple it up. I've long held that the 24mm size was fit for road work, but maybe overchoked for a trialer. The carb came from a GP100 so I'm awaiting suitable jets and filter. Anyway I'd like to hear any experienced views, thanks.

My reason for posting this is because i am confused as to the differences on rules for Trials between the ACU and the AMCA. Now every year the ACU publish a handbook which is sort of clear, actually some of it is very badly unthought out but at least it's something, with regards to the rules of the sport and the construction of the bikes especially the Classic Pre65 and Twinshocks. However after trawling the AMCA website, because i have never seen an AMCA handbook and neither has anybody else i have asked, i cant find any "rules". Now i know the ACU clubs use the front wheel spindle as the "marker" for being in or out of the section whereas the AMCA seem to use front whe…

A friend of mine recently found a copy of Sammy Millers catalogue with a price list from 1973. Now for those of you around at the time, this was the bible for any "bling" parts for you Spanish trials weapon, with loads of lightweight goodies on offer However, how many can remember how much things cost back then ???? So, I have scanned 3 pages and for a bit of fun, take a guess at the 1973 prices of the following items.... 1. The Sherpa mudguard stays (Item FM2) 2. The Ossa chainguard (MAR3) 3. Plastic front number plate (BSM)26 4. The fibreglass slimline kit....this came with seat and an alloy downswept tailpipe 5......and finally, the Bultaco Highboy frame kit…

Hi All , I've just repaired the fibreglass tank on my Bully after it sprung a leak. I resin coated the inside and let it cure. Having looked up some older postings on the effect of ethanol in fuel, and before i refill it, is ethanol free fuel available now, and what fuel companys supply it, if any.

Restoring a 199B bultaco for twin shock competition and curious if converting to the type of rim that uses the external type spoke as opposed to the through the rim type spoke would be an advantage?

Hello I am a new member who has just obtained a garage full of Greeves parts from my father (who has decided, he's never going to get the bikes built!) He collected over many years and always bought stuff that hadn't been hacked about. There are the makings of at leasts three bikes (two Scottish trials and one Hawkstone Scrambler with banana forks). When I say makings, I mean 2 complete Villiers engines, plenty of parts to make a third, tanks, frame parts etc... Missing parts are things like exhausts, rims, mudguards and control gear... all stuff that should be available new. The problem I have is that I have never been as mechanically adept as my old man and wa…

Right then, now the Fantic is nearly re-built I want to start making some plans for a trip (or two!) away in 2012! I've always fancied doing a trial abroad but it seems unless you know where to look they're not so well advertised. So... is there a definitive list of trials (ideally multi-day) for twinshocks in Europe (or the UK come to that) that shouldn't be missed?! If anyone has dates or links to the club sites it would be much appreciated! Thanks very much!

I havn't seen this topic but if it has already been posted my apologises. My opening gambit commences with three questions below. One rule to this thread please 'No bashing honest replies'. Pictures would be great of your British/Twinshock bikes and any helpful bike set up tips for me especially...lol. Sorry no pics of my bike its in bits i'm setting about if with some halfords spray cans at the moment and not doing to gooda job. I'm riding a Fantic 240 Q: What weight of fork oil (or type of oil) do you recommend to prevent agreesive rebound on a set of 1980's 35mm zocchi forks? Q: How do you remove head race bearings? Q: What flywheel weights are best used on rocks i…

Greetings, I altered a Suzuki 185 trail bike for trials service and it's coming along pretty well. The motor is stock and I made a pipe to get it going and now want to make improvements with pipe and port timing. Most of what I need can be found in factory data or engine measurements except engine RPM range typical in amateur trials. I would guess 800~6000 with peak around 4K? Does anyone know better? Thanks!

This is a question to any Spanish forum members.. last weekend a English friend of mine, resident in France went to ride a Classic Spanish trial. On arrival and presentation of his French licence was told this was no longer acceptable and the only option was to purchase a day licence at quite a cost. My question, has there been a recent change whereby Non Spanish licences are now not acceptable, when riding in Spain. I try to get down to three or four a year and would like to know before making further arrangements. It would be a real shame if this was the case, but I fully understand if its and insurance issue. Its a question that need answers as there are I am sure m…

Just for fun! In Mike Rapleys header, I used a picture from a classic trial. Who is it and where and when was the picture taken? For a bonus point - I modified the original picture. Can you tell me what shouldn't be there. Nice and easy for most of you guys I bet !

I know it must be difficult when fixing dates due to so many fixtures now and different organising bodies involved, but there are three date clashes for two of the main Pre65 road based series this year. The Miller championship and the Northern British Bike series. Both have events on 24th March, 14th July and 13th October. Both of the events on the 14th July are in Yorkshire so that is going to hit one series badly in terms of Pre65 entries. The Miller series is down to 7 rounds this year and for the life of me I can't understand why it isn't better supported by Pre65 entries, especially when you see the number of entries for Scotland. Two routes to choose from means a…
