Trials Training And Technique

Riding Hints, Tips and Tricks

Want to learn hopping the front wheel. Have watched the vids and get how you compress the front suspension and work with it on the way back up. . . but whenever i try to stop and balance and try I always loose balance I can balance on the bike in the shed with engine off with the front wheel turned about 45degrees but cant when its straight. . . Any tips on how to learn hopping or should I go back to trying to balance with front wheel straight? I was told that hopping helps balancing and vice versa so they compliment each other was thinking about getting someone to hold the bike steady while I try hopping. . .

Can anyone give tips on the technique for this? I'm referring to getting up a boulder from a stop with the front wheel on the face. Even balancing that way seems difficult to me but I have had some luck finding balance long enough to zap the back tire up on top. The problem is once the back is up I end up falling over backwards.

  3. Is anyone offering training suitable for beginners in the north east? I asked at Warden Law and they said someone used to do lessons there but they haven't seen them for ages. I'm just looking to speed up my progress since I've missed the summer with bike faults. I've got about 6 hours experience on a trials bike so I'm a total novice. (I'll hopefully get a few more hours tomorrow at Warden Law, if I'm not too stiff after Fridays fall - I hesitated twice, on and off the throttle when I realised I had no idea what was over a hill I was half way up, flipped it and didn't land too well.)

Jacked the topic from another forum. Do u believe in riding with bend knees or not ? This person says bend them : And here someone who only does it with direct function : In my opinion the basics should be with "straight" legs (mostly a little bend)If u start with to much bend there is little room for action and the weight is easily going more to the back, making things more difficult. (That is a problem I have)

Just fitted 35mm bar risers to the Beta. Wow what a transformation, the riding position is great for an old codger like me with short arms. feel alot more confident with most of my weight on the pegs and less on the bars. Far less tiring, can recommend this mod to anyone with a back twinge. tom,

  8. I believe that Jeremy Magrath (7 time Supercross champion) eats lots of protein, when he can. I've seen Marc Colomer (3 world titles, counting indoors) being fed pasta in a section, by his minder. I believe pro body builders (not sure how relevant their program is to trials success, though) eat protein, protein and one more thing (...oh yea, now I remember: protein!) :-) One poster here said a good BALANCE (good word for trials anyway) between carbs and proteins helped him. I'm about a 40/36/24 ratio of carbs/proteins/oils in my diet. Your suggestions? What's the diet of a pro rider?

I am just starting out riding trials after years of road riding and have joined Horsforth club so I can practice in Swaine Woods. What I want to know though is what are the first things and steps I should take when learning how to ride and control the bike? Should I just ride around gently at first? Then on to uphills or downhills? Lifting front wheel? etc etc. I just dont want to run before I can walk but also dont want to pick up bad habits very early on. Hopefully someone at the club will let me ride with them from time to time and impart some of their wisdom on me but for now I just want to get started.

I have heard that if you get your brakes hot and then throw cold water on them this makes the brakes really sharp. Any comments good, bad or indifferent? Thanks. Alan

Well first of all im new to this site and to the trials scene so hello. I recently bought an old Aprillia 240 Climber to see weather i like trials or not... ( i love it ) So i took it for a spin to see if i get along with it or not. I took a video and i noticed my stance seemed really strange. So just looking for advise, what to do next, how i can step it up a notch and help correct my stance Cheers Jack And here's the videeo

Yesterday, I took my first ever ride on a trials bike. I had known that there was a substantial amount of skill required to do this correctly, but boy, was I ever unprepared for what trials was all about. I had watched the Ryan Young and other Trials related how to videos on line. I knew that trying to climb a six foot sheer rock face was lunacy for a guy my age, but the examples of correct riding positions and techniques were pretty much counter intuitive to what I knew from riding a dirt bike. Luckily for me, no sooner than having pulled up to my parking area, a guy on a trials bike rode by. I flagged him down and explained my rather clueless situation with trials ridin…

  14. Oooo it even smells like a new forum.... (I feel like sam should break this in but i am also feeling greedy) Well let me ask the first question. I have a bad habit. I hold my breath! Half way through the section i am blue and out of breath. I have never heard of lamaz <sp? for trials but i think i could really benifit from a prebirthing class on breathing. Some of my felow riders use beer as an anesethic but i only end up drunk and out of breath.... not good.... Anybody know how to combat this? --Biff

Hey guys, I get a lot of different advice from different people at the trials clubs I go to. Watching people at trials I've noticed ways of riding vary a lot. Just curious, how do you guys generally ride a trial? I know a lot depends on conditions, but some guys only really use 1st gear, some experts I've watched are going round on a 300 in 3rd slipping the clutch. Some guys use no clutch at all, others use it for everything. Some people squat and hang off the bike, some people have a more neutral position. There are fast guys, and slow riders too. I'm too early on yet to have developed a way of riding, but I think I need to practice in 1st gear more, really try to get…

Hi all, Can anyone recommend a training center? I am new to trials and can find nowhere to practice so I have to enter trials to learn. After my first one I learnt so much and was confident and looking forward to the next. However when I got there the weather was rubbish and the sections were huge. I crashed on the first section I tried and then retired from the trial knowing I did not have the skills required for the conditions or difficulty of the sections. Even people I saw clear every section on my first trial where falling off!!! So I need to find some training so that I can restore my confidence and learn what to do properly. I live in Cambridgeshire but…

At only my second trial yesterday I had a nightmare. Kept falling off on the hills, it was really getting me down, like I'd clear it one lap, fall off for a 5 the next. Then the next hill I'd fall off again, ir get stuck and take a 5. I didn't enjoy the day at tbh.

I had 4 dogturds together in a big split (too big a needle for the original dogturds). A gentle ride and they blew out followed by all the slime. Do you think I can get a big patch welded to the inside or is it time for a new tyre?
