Riding Hints, Tips and Tricks

  1. Started by mcanic,

hi folks I am new to the arena of trials and have just purchased a 1985 TY 350. The bike runs as sweet as a nut but the previous 2 strokes I have ridden has had a more aggressive power delivery mine is very smooth right up to 3/4 throttle loads of torque but from 3/4 to wot the power stops building it doesn't drop off simply nothing more happens. It is standard bike it had a 145 main jet and a 38 pilot jet in the standard carby. I have changed the main jet to a 155 to see if it was short on fuel and also moved the clip position on the needle from the centre position to the lower clip position. Are these style of bikes all torque less aggression as MX bikes tend to be the…

  2. Just picked up a brand new Beta EVO 300 Factory with kick starter on left side of motor. This is a new one for me. Being 65 years old my kick starting oomf aint quite what it once was. Tried to start it today, no luck. I am looking for some tips. Is it better to stand over it and use right leg or stand off it and use right leg? Thank you

what does this do to your riding? Force you to ride 'straight up'? move your weight forward? and how far is too far? I've been advised to move my bars well forward of the tripleclamp on my '03 Sherco250. I'm not comfortable with this but have been told this is the better to set up a newer bike.

Thought I'd start a separate topic on bike size for a beginner, but only trials riding beginner. Now I know there is very little to compare road riding to trials riding but I know a road rider of almost 30 years experience who is considering buying a 270 beta for their first bike. They ride a gsxr 1000 road bike so no stranger to power and the rider is only 8 stone, so my question is, will the rider be able to cope with a 270 as a first bike ??? Oh and the rider is female.

I posted this question before and it bugs me! I have rode mototrials all my life on the balls of my feet. Started riding bike trials a few years ago and the top riders around me said ride on the arch of your feet, on pedal bike that is. With todays techniques as a weekend warrior it seems like riding on the arches makes since. When riding this way I seem to keep my heels down more and my elbows tend to stay up. I tend to ride more sqaure, if that makes since. One huge weakness I have is not using my legs more, but moving to my arches makes me feel like I'm taking a huge amount of weight off my arms. Feels like I can hop better also, off camber stuff feels extremely akwar…

Is the back brake used here to keep the bike steady for that split second, or is he just slipping the clutch? Thanks

I thought the slo-mo of this was really useful to see just how the rider moves his body. https://amp.twimg.com/v/e9e71a02-9a17-43e4-8e6a-96b4939839ab

Hi guys, I'm trying to improve my balance and finding it harder with the straight steer I think it is the most proficient way to improve it. I'm able to balance with the bike off with no hands but I find hard to ride on top of a 20 cm wide straight kerb. Any tips to get there? Ta

Hello, I haven't been on this forum in absolutely ages so I'm sorry if I break any rules by posting this here. Basically, I am starting the Blue route this year and I am very good at balance so that isn't a problem. I can spin the bike round without putting feet down but can not do it from a stand still and can only spin it about 80 - 90 degrees. So some technique advice on spinning the bike from stand still would help; I know it is practice and I have been, just want to make sure that I am using the right sort of technique to do so. I think that's it to be honest. Being as doing blues this year there is a lot of tight turns that you will not be able to ride around sort…

Hi guys! I would like to learn how to balance stationary bike with front wheel straight and sleeping engine. I should add it is on the smooth concrete floor. I have tried plenty of variations like keeping the weight back, middle, front, low and high, moving bum/knees sideways, crouching wide or touching bike with inner legs while weighting quickly on the pegs when doing all of this. I see some progress but not enough to see what is working and what is not. Can please somebody tell me what to do? Also, I cannot figure up the leg stretching - which side is which and what is it combined with. Brain balance implant chip wanted! Maplin?

Looks like our next trial will be in the snow, as a 1st year rider what are the major tips for traction uphill, slow turns, and descents? Deep snow probably allows a lot of grip, but what about compacted snow, then icy stuff after a few riders have been through?

I am new to trials, really new. I just picked up my first bike this week. With that said I have a million questions but one of the most pressing is which gear should I be in. One of my friends that has been riding trials for awhile says he rarely gets out of first gear. I have read some tips that say you should be shifting up to third gear for getting over larger obstacles. Anyway, does anyone have a couple of tips?

I'm having trouble getting this dialled, i always end up with either the not getting the back wheel high enough or when the bach wheel goes a bit higher the front wheel isnt high enough. I have the Ryan Young DVD but finding his technique a bit hard as he talks about a massive upper body explosion of power which i find hard due to a bad shoulder. Watching Dougie do them he seems to hardly use his upper body compared to Ryan, i think Dougie uses his legs more, see here: 3min 36secs http://fwd.five.tv/fifth-gear/videos/other...-dougie-lampkin Anyone have any vids or advice on this.

  20. I would love to join a trials class, but cant due to time, so im stuck learning on my own. as of now, im just somewhat trail riding and learning to get over somewhat technical ledges about 1ft high, slow riding, and just trying to static balance. I am hoping someone can somewhat guide me on what order I should do things. I met someone and they told me, just find a playground for now with small ledges, climbs, etc and ride over them slowly, get over them slowly. Try Static balance at the start, just a little before the obstacle and try getting over it, then slowly pick more technical lines. So i combined this list to see if anyone can offer some advice and this is t…
