Bultaco

  1. Started by trialsrfun,

How much different are the engine power characteristics between the earlier & slightly smaller capacity later Bultaco 250 models. In the Bultaco book the earlier 244cc bikes seem to be around 20/21 bhp, the later 238cc engines 14.1 bhp, very odd that they lost 1/3rd their power when reduced by 6cc's.

  3. Hi all, I wonder if you could help me with my 2 questions below... 1) I am currently finishing the full restoration of a model 150 Sherpa T 250 and got the engine running today after installing the (new style) electronic ignition from Dave at Bultaco UK. The bike starts, idles, revs and runs really nicely - the problem is that when i blip the throttle the revs don't drop back to idle as quickly as i would expect. After each blip, the revs drop gradually, slowly settling back to normal idle - it may only take 1-2 seconds, but it doesn't seem quite right to me. - I have had the engine fully re-built by the guys at Bultaco UK, so it should all be sound - The throttle se…

  4. Hi My M159 is all restored with new seals, bearings etc, etc. The only moving parts not renewed are the piston/rings/bores (loads of compression and fine in my opinion) and the swing arm bushes (not a problem). Apart from that its all new. I've fitted electrex ignition which is timed correctly for this model I believe (2.9mm BTDC) checked on a strobe and it starts on choke very easily. Everything is very smooth and lovely, BUT, in order for it to tick over correctly once warmed up it has to have the mixture screw wound all the way in! If I try backing it out at all (1.5 turns out is standard) it coughs and backfires even at 1/8th turn out from fully seated it starts to…

Dear All, I'm now at the stage of putting my Frontera back together. I've got one of the Electrex electronic units and am too embarassed to ring them yet again as to how to set up the timing! I have their info sheet but I still can't work it out. The Bultaco manual says static timing should be 2.4-2.6 mm BTDC, that's static timing. The Electrex unit automatically advances above 4,000 rpm. The Electrex sheet says that 2.4mm BTDC equates to 22:30' degrees BTDC on the flywheel and suggests you use a strobe to set the engine (i.e. when running) to this. So engine running set to 2.4 mm BTDC, engine static 2.4mm BTDC. SO where's teh advance gone? DO they mean that you run the…

Was wondering if any of you chaps could help out, went to start my 199A, NO GO. used to start piece of P***, full choke a couple of boots and she would she would start. but now will only start with little choke and no throttle, chuggs along for 30 secs and then dies. also dies if you twist the throttle, i am guessing that it is the pilot jet. Any thoughts???????????? Regards, Tom,

Hi all, I have a 340 Bultaco, I bought it off Roy "Ago" Wilson some years back, although I have ridden it a few times it is a bit rough in places and I'm currently considering a general direction for a refurb ( i.e. do up as is or continue the development)for another go at riding it. At the time of purchase it was already in a fairly modified state i.e. having been vesty-ised to some extent at the rear end, according to Roy this could have been carried out by Chris Milner. I managed to speak to Chris at a trial a few years ago and he could not confirm if it was his work or not, I have also spoken to Dave Renham who confirmed that it was supplied new to Dave Thorpe, I hav…

Also thinking about skimming a little off the fly wheel to improve response, but worried i'll sacrefice grip. Going to lower and replace the footrests aswell. if anyone can …

At the recent Telford show there was a Bultaco trials bike with a chromed frame standing next to a Model 10 near to Dave Renham's stand. The front half of the frame looked std Bult but the rear was quite different, do you know the make of frame or reason for its modification.

I would like to contact Wayne Weedon to ask him a question about Bultaco brakes that he would be most qualified to answer. It does not appear that he is active on this site anymore. Does anyone have contact information for Wayne? Thank you. Rich Lee Pennsylvania, USA

Hi - My first (last) posting concerned head steadies; continuing in a similar engine bracketry vein, can one of you knowledgeable Bully fans tell me what the bracket on the left fits? This places the swing-arm pivot about 1/2" closer to a line through the engine mounting-bolt hole centres than the Sherpa 340 bracket on the right (which has the same hole spacing as the older-style alloy bracket 159.10-064). This the second time I've bought one of the these unidentified brackets (sight unseen, of course) and was assured by the sellers in each case that it was removed from a Sherpa; I had a feeling they were Pursang, but the only MX one I have is different again, as …

I'd like to hear some evaluations from those that have used them. It seems to me that a 325 has plenty of power, but I wonder if an ignition with an advance curve would noticeably widen the power band by letting the engine rev higher. That would likely rerduce the need for shifting in a section.

  20. Hi all, I was wondering if someone could give me a colour/paint reference for the blue and silver used on the aluminium 'homerlite' tanks on a 74/75 Sherpa T 250 (model 150)? Please see pic attached for reference. I have a compressor/paint gun setup, or can use spray cans if there is a good match anyone can suggest. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance. Cheers, Max
