General Trials Talk

General discussion on the sport of Observed Motorcycle Trials

  1. Started by heavydabber,

Just looking through the various threads and there's SO many on tyres, mainly on opinion of what's best? So I thought I'd start another ??? But standing back and looking at the subject from a different angle maybe(?), current situation is that there's only two serious, worthwhile competitive options for rear tyres anyway, Michelin and Dunlop and that's the way it's been for a good while. Both retail at well over £120 a time and it's mainly down to how much you can haggle your dealer down to for the best price. Is this doing trials any favours and is it a healthy situation to have the market dominated by just two realistic choices? Obviously the current situation…

Well, to be honest I've been a bit of a tit... I bought some rather cheap custom graphics on ebay, they came and were awfully thin with the smallest of protective layer! These ones "linky" They needed a tiny amount of trimming to fit properly but they went on and looked pretty smart but after the first time they got wet the protective layer seems to have worn through and the graphics now feel like paper! I've sprayed allsorts on them, about 3 layers of lacquer and then a spray of silicon stuff... However, this seems to of worn through already! So... do any of you know of any sprays that leave a THICK protective layer? (bit like me really!) Many regards, Jamie

When you go to buy a new car, your options are base model base price, and adding extra's adds cost. I see many posts on adding things to bikes like the fat bars, wheels with no rimbands etc, these can be personal choice or an improvement over the stock item, bottom line it comes down to cost. It must be cheaper to put the part on at the factory, than replace with an upgrade after you have bought the machine, in MX it's after market bits and a whole shed load to choose from, trials is so small aftermarket parts are not a big industry so fewer are about. What if these options were available before you bought the bike!! would you put in an order for the new machine with …

Wow, only last week I was wondering what happened to Shaun after his eye accident, he was an awesome rider and I thought he may have kept his hand in on a bike. Then I saw this: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2718732/Inside-100-000-fake-Timberland-Ugg-boot-empire-run-ex-world-motorbike-champion-bedroom.html

In the same way that passenger aircraft technology seems to have gone backwards with the scrapping of Concorde has trials done the same with the 4 strokes? Not lighter, no new technology although possibly easier to ride? Was the GG Pro the last big step forward? - Lighter and with a revolutionary gearbox, yet pretty much the same price as it's predecessor. Passenger planes are no faster than 30 years ago when Concorde was introduced. Just bigger and smoother. Whaddaya think chaps?

I came across this site recently & have just downloaded the December issue. The title may not entice a trials rider, but the test of Raga's 2008 bike & the 4T comparison test should. Check it out http://www.motocrossdigital.com/ The download is free

Following the sometimes acrimonious thread regarding a new Mont model, what is clear is that Honda seem to have lost interest in trials. It's not a certainty but they don't seem to be bothered about their sales presently. So Honda seem to be withdrawing and Yamaha have gone. In the space of a few months we've lost the longest lasting manufacturers in the sport (both entered the sport in '74. That's 35 years of continuous involvement). Is this a sign of the (financial) times or have they just lost interest? Sad times indeed. Discuss..

Hi all I recently purchased my first bike: 2000 Beta Rev 3 270cc As it is my first bike, I don't know much about them. Reading through some of the posts on here, a lot of you clean your bikes straight after a run. Is this really that important and if so, what is the purpose?

I help run a local trials club and it concerns me that entries/membership has tailed off a bit recently. At times I feel the trials world in these parts is like a secret society, how do other clubs help promote themselves to the wider public?

im building my bike and i cant get the thing to spark !! its winding me up ! the frames been powder coated but i havn't taken the pant off any of the lugs for the grounding. (why im thinking no spark) However ive been doing continuity tests between the engine and bolts on the frame and there positive. So its making me think the engine and frame are connected therefore the engine is grounded? but still no spark. Multimeter - - Getting a voltage output on the magneto cables. - but im not getting anything on the cable that goes to the coil (the one that comes from the 'advance' box. So is it cos of the ground or my advance box? I've tried different plugs and nothing, …

Evening all, Just trawling the internet looking at new and new/used bikes and getting a bit bewildered (it’s not difficult!) As I am now a seasoned rider (!) of some four months I want to upgrade my bike so I just thought I’d share this and see if anyone has any interesting input. I bought a Rev3 250 to get going and see if I liked it but I’m hooked and I’d like something newer really. I’d also quite like a 4 stroke, no real reason I just like the sound of them and I like the idea of low end low rev grunt, I always liked that in other bikes I’ve had. And hopefully they’re a bit quieter for practicing at home. If I haven’t missed anything, I think that means…

Hi Folks, Just looking for an easy solution to this problem if there is one. How much pressure is it safe to use to get a new trial tyre onto the rim? Rear tyre, tube fitted due to air leaking at the spokes even though a seal is fitted, lots of soapy water used. Used 70lb of pressure but last bit of the tyre still won't pop onto the rim properly. Tries valve out and in, and tried using the rubbery bead seal thing that should pop out when the tyre is on. Plan B will be to refit the old tyre if I can't figure it out! Thanks Alan

Hi all, Can anyone advise on what's the best tyre for muddy conditions?? At home where I do most of my riding is's pretty much all mud apart from the river bed, currently use a mitchelin x11 which came on the bike, which spins like crazy. Are there any better ones or are trials bikes just ment for the dry stuff? Cheers

Anyone build there own engine stand? I’ve used the wooden box stand for years. Decided to look into building a metal stand that rotates. Here are a few ideas I’ve found.

I can see that a trials helmet is lightweight and more breathable without face protection, but why do most trials riders not wear helmets with face protection? It seems if you were to slap the ground with your face, the helmet is useless... Saw a video of a guy plant his face on a rock, ouch! Thanks for your patience as I am obviously a newbie! There are certainly lightweight, breathable full face downhill mountain bike helmets made that I am leaning towards purchasing over a true trials helmet, help my decision please. Cheers!
