SWM

I got into vintage trials a few years ago, I always wanted a SWM! When I was a kid SWM trials where the bike to have! I didn't have one then but almost 40 years later I finally bought one! I really like them! They handle great and the brakes even work! I enjoy them as much as the modern trials bikes I had! I actually ended up with four over the summer, (sold the 240 to a friend of mine). I have a 1980 TL320 that's my main bike, I bought from the top rider from our club, he also won the AMA National twin shock series in 2013 on the same bike! Now that my SWM is running reasonably well (still needs cosmetics) I have noticed, or imagined, that it does not pick up a quickly as my Aprilia did, is this entirely down to flywheel weight ? I suppose the sensible thing would be to take them off and weight them, but if some one knows ? Were there any other differences between the two Rotax engines, apart from clutch covers on the later Aprilia's ? Thanks Ross

Was at a trial yesterday and a very kind person gave me a tip. He said that if I turned the front brake arm so that it was pointing forwards that it would work better. He then tried to explain that if the top shoe grips before the bottom shoe the brake works better. All I want to know is he talking p***

Hi, has anybody out there had problems with Venhill cables ? I ordered clutch, throttle and frontbrake cables for my 81 125 and 320 and have had the following problems. The brake cables were too short and could not be fitted to the bikes any way even though the cables listed were for Marzocchi forks. The throttle cables fit as long as you only connect one end. The inner is too short or the outer too long on both, whichever way you look at it. The brake cable issue has been solved. Venhill changed them, no problem but now I'm trying to get the throttle cable problem solved. The picture shows the throttle end with the carb end in place. Even when all of the…

Hi Guys, A very helpful past owner of my 1982 tl 320 let me know how he set the clutch up. As follows: replaced clutch springs with 6 xr 650 valve springs A$35.00, whacked on a venhill clutch cable and uses a magura lever rather than standard It works like a ty now, its great. I believe the plates were replaced with barnetts but still confirming that.

Hi, I fitted new carbs to my bikes and did some testing on Sunday morning. Also tried my action cam out for the first time. The 320 is sorted but the 125 still soots up the plug after a short while. I'm scratchin my head and a few other places besides. The carb is brand new, original spec. I have fresh 102 octane with no methanol mixed at 50:1 full synthetic oil. The exhaust has been cleaned and the middle box repacked. The timing is spot on and a brand new NGK BP5ES plug. The filter is clean, there are no leaks, new crank seals. To be continued...........

Here's my Jumbo project. I bought it as an unfinished project. It's slowly coming together. The tank was as knackered as you'd expect of a 30 year old bike, found a guy who polishes them up and he did a fantastic job, Now I need to make up some badges. Thinking of doing it in CAD and having them printed. If any one could provide straight on pictures of the right and left badges I'd much appreciate it. Question for any of you SWM owners whose bikes have a nice light clutch action - How do you set up the clutch spring tension? Are the pressure plate bolts tightened right up to the end of their travel and left like that or are they then backed off so many turns. Bike in question is a Jumbo which has the lightener under the tank connected up but the clutch action on the lever is very heavy - the pressure plate bolts are screwed all the way in so I'm wondering if they should be backed off a little but as I have no manual or set up info I've no idea. I can experiment obviously but if someone knows how they should be set it would make life easier than trial and error. Alt…

This all wheel drive SWM was built in 1981! It was a Prototype, they competed with it once and the FIM banned all wheel drive bikes. If anyone else knows anymore about this Prototype or have more pictures, please post them!

Was at a classic trial yesterday and I noticed that some 2 strokes 'four stroke' at idle and some don't. My TL320 SWM always four strokes at idle, is this usual? cheers guys

Hi guys, just a quick hi, not been around for a while....my fleet of Gixers, other roadbikes, new to me Firestorm, track day car & my love of track days at Snetterton has kept me busy from realising my dream as a World Trials 'Chump'. OK, I dug Speedy out of her hibernation and couldn't free off the clutch, no matter what I did. Next weekend tried again and finally got her to free off but with terrible clutch drag. So yesterday (these things take time!) I stripped the clutch down and my gearbox oil was contaminated with water (again) looking for all purposes like she had done a head gasket - as if watercooled - she was that bad. See…

on may 6,2007 on the east coast of the US we are trying to get almost20 swm trials bikes in one spot. that many swms together at a trials hasn`t been seen since the early 80`s.i hope it doesn`t speed up the melting of the ice packs....johnnyb

My SWM TL320 1982 has had a few updates so heres a few notes for others that maybe doing similar. New tyres michelin front; IRC rear, new wheel and str. head brgs., new chain and sprockets, new EBC brake shoes, fuel tap, new rear guard and new stickers. Heres a list on some of the work to date. 1. Stg. head brgs. not available in Oz [supplied from Martin at SWM moto]. 2. The sprocket I had on the rear had a steel insert /hub which offset the sprocket from the hub approx. 2mm. When I replaced with talon sprocket without a recess I used 2mm thick washers and ground them on one side so the chain wouldn't foul on them. 3. Sprocket bolts were loose when i went to change…

Hello everyone I am a new SWM owner living in South West Scotland. I acquired my 1980 320 TL from someone on Ebay last September. The bike had been restored, after being imported from Italy three years before, which included a couple of what l now understand are standard mods. One of these was moving the foot pegs back and down by about 1/2 an inch. In their new position the foot pegs had fillets run down their length to strengthen them. This means that the fillets foul the side stand, and unless l grind the offending fillet back, l can't fit the stock side stand. Hi, has anybody out there had any experience with this type of clutch actuator ? Does it make a big difference or none at all to the lightness of the clutch ?

Hi, I've had the crankcasing of my 280 engine beadblasted so as to be able to see if there is any bad corosion which needs to be taken care of before rebuilding. I'd like to know what paint would be the best option to use to reseal the surface, bearing in mind that it needs to be nonporous, hard (scratch resistant) and of course be easy to apply and look good ;o] Any ideas.....

Anybody got a inlet to carb rubber ? I've tried Martin and Jumbostu. Thanks Ross Must be the SWM straight one, not the cranked Aprilia etc.
