Since a group of us have gone nuts with trials riding the past year, it's also dramatically changed the way we ride our dirt bikes as we apply the trials techniques to the bigger heavier bikes. As a result, we've slowed down a lot, get less injuries. do far less damage to the environment and (hopefully) have become better riders as a result! If anyone is interested, we've been posting these vids and articles. we've started a website about cross training techniques as well here. Was thinking a bit about the physics of trials- in a laymen's sense. Is it possible that a heavier rider may have an advantage over a lighter rider, all other things being equal? The heavier rider gets more traction presumably, and has a greater weight to bike weight ratio. Perhaps the heavier rider has more control in the sense that the heavy rider is less prone to being influenced by the bikes actions. Over a rocky creek for example the bike is reacting to the terrain, can a 200 lb. rider influence the bike to do what he wants more than a 150 lb. rider of equal skill. Does the extra weight make the bike have less "say" in its trajectory and give the rider more control? …

Hey guys, I get a lot of different advice from different people at the trials clubs I go to. Watching people at trials I've noticed ways of riding vary a lot. Just curious, how do you guys generally ride a trial? I know a lot depends on conditions, but some guys only really use 1st gear, some experts I've watched are going round on a 300 in 3rd slipping the clutch. Some guys use no clutch at all, others use it for everything. Some people squat and hang off the bike, some people have a more neutral position. There are fast guys, and slow riders too. I'm too early on yet to have developed a way of riding, but I think I need to practice in 1st gear more, really try to get…

Hi All, I have been riding for many (40+) years, but I am totally new to the sport. Bought recently a Cota 315R and I am having a hard time finding a comfortable position for the levers, the clutch in particular. Holding the clutch with my index finger ends up pinching my fingers or hitting my knuckles. From various pictures and videos, I see setups that are dramatically different, WRT inclination and horizontal position on the handlebars. I know the answer is "whatever works best for me", but when learning I find easier to start from a neutral setup and progressively adjust from there. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I've been riding around this area for years and never thought about how amazing it is until I bought a trials bike. I rode there yesterday and it's about as good as I can imagine. It actually looks even better up close Anyone care to come to Reno and give me some riding tips!

Hello, I'm interested in the proper handle bar positioning, but all I find on the topic is to Position bars so they are in the optimum "middle position." What exactly is that??? Is this having the bars parallel to the forks or is this to have them in a vertical position to the fork angle. thanks, R

Just been out for a quick pootle about in my woods...very lucky in the that respect. Been practicing very slow/stopping/start tight turns and when (it's never 'if' with me ) we go off balance, its always the inside foot that goes down. I've even tried to force myself to over balance on outside foot but my head just can't do it. ....I know the bike wants to fall 'into' the inside due to the physics, but then I should be allowing for this with my balance, but, I never over balance to the outside.

Hi, How to decide, if junior-frame or fullsize frame 80cc. Both kids are riding, one with Beta Jr 80cc and other decided to ride petrol, so we'll ditch the Oset. Both are same size 12yo 155-160cm height. Should we take Beta/GasGas 80cc full size frame or Jr/cadet frame as a second bike. So one of them would advance from Jr to fullsize frame. For me it seems quite natural to keep them both on smaller frame for a year or so. But there are some riders advocating for bigger frame without any proper reasoning. It seems that bigger frame (and tires!) are easier to balance and better climbing on natural obstacles. But on the other hand I'd like them to practi…

I've been riding on and off road for years and always used the clutch as an "off" switch when the bike started to "buck" due to low rpm. I'd slip the clutch or down shift to get around it. However, I've been reading on the forum that I should be able to do full lock turns without touching the clutch at all as the bike will not stall due to all of the flywheel weight. My 2015 Sherco 300 starts to "buck" when I go very slow and I always jump to the conclusion that I need to pull the clutch in and slip it to keep turning. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hello again , just need some basic questions answered for trials as I am aware of the answers for general dirt bikes 1/, I assume you select correct gear prior to taking of and rarely change while on the move 2/ while going slow in turns which brake is used or both and what proportion 3/ what angle should the bars be on , at the moment it's vertical Thanks that's it for now

Tried Moto Merlin but they were out of stock. Bought one on Ebay. The case and cover looks fine but the disk is a plain white DVDR. I contacted the seller who claims it is genuine, he points to the fact that it is a small production company in the states and this is the norm. Can anyone confirm this? Regards Gordon

Last trip out I ventured down a dry creek bed and did a few dabs until I came to a 2ft6" to 3 ft washed away area that was a straight drop... and it was a two-footed 5 to take stock of the situation. MMMMmmmmm! I felt I might go back over front so chickened out. For me, rightly so... no need for any injury at this stage! I spent 5 mins piling rocks against the face at a 45 degree to enable me to go down the face for now and continue practicing riding rocks with minimal dabs. Remove rocks with more experience. You wouldn't believe it... as I'm moving rocks against drop-off face this voice from above says "Hey Mate!... No altering the section!!!" Thats right! My chee…

I am currently riding a 125 beta 08 and I am not sure if I am using the appropriate gear to do certain moves. To be more specific, I am learning how to double-blip. I am doing it in 2nd gear right now, but I need to rev the engine quite a bit to get the rear tire to make it on to the object (basically for the rear to take off and land where the front was). 3rd gear seems a little tall, especially when you get onto the obstacle. I am using a lot of body movement but I don't get the kick for the bike to come after me. The 125 is geared lower than the bigger displacement bikes... any suggestions? I just wanna make sure I've picked the right gear to practice with so I don'…
