Trials Training And Technique

Riding Hints, Tips and Tricks

  1. Started by al_orange,

This may be a simple one (but that's why I'm asking). I'm a novice (been riding enduro for a few years) and I think I've got really poor throttle control. It may be because I'm very left handed but I work the clutch all the time and perhaps use it to make up for lack of throttle control. I've already fitted a slow action throttle. So - Are there any good drills for developing throttle control? Any pointers for when to stay off the clutch? Thanks.

Hi: Newbie here, and today I started to practices tight turns on a downhill slope. The drill is going down a slope (20 to 30% I'd say) then initiate a as tight as possible turn to go back up hill. My tendency is to lean the bike "in" the turn (which is toward the uphill side) and that just causes the front wheel to wash out (it's in pretty loose dirt). So I was wondering what's the right approach in that case? Try to keep the bike vertical and weigh the outside peg? I tried and that makes the balancing really difficult. Thanks. DC

I rode to the edge of my property to do some trial riding to break up the monotony of practicing in my back yard and came across a couple of logs at a steep angle to the trail. There isn't enough room on the trail to hit them perpendicular. How do you cross them without kicking the rear end out from under you or stepping down to pivot turn over them?

I am going to finally layout a course in my backyard. I have some basic obstacles but I am unsure how "tight" to layout a course. I'm one of those people that need to put limits in to keep myself honest so, I'd like to setup reasonable sections. No, "I think that was a tight enough turn", etc. lol. I saw the YouTube videos in Australia but I'd like to see what is done in other areas.

  5. I've been riding on and off road for years and always used the clutch as an "off" switch when the bike started to "buck" due to low rpm. I'd slip the clutch or down shift to get around it. However, I've been reading on the forum that I should be able to do full lock turns without touching the clutch at all as the bike will not stall due to all of the flywheel weight. My 2015 Sherco 300 starts to "buck" when I go very slow and I always jump to the conclusion that I need to pull the clutch in and slip it to keep turning. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  7. I was thinking about if anyone one here knows if there are any good trials training courses/ schools around the Barcelona area. I found a couple of links for trail riding tours in Spain, but not trial specific. Could be a fun trip for a weekend in the spring or autumn with a few mates..?

Hi guys, I'm trying to improve my balance and finding it harder with the straight steer I think it is the most proficient way to improve it. I'm able to balance with the bike off with no hands but I find hard to ride on top of a 20 cm wide straight kerb. Any tips to get there? Ta

  9. Started by trial bike,

Hi guys and gals, Do any of you have any tips on floater turns? I was practising them tonight for a change. I have watched, and do watch the Ryan vids, as good as they are, he makes everything look so easy. I am practising up hill, with a steady pace in first or second gear and when ready I am initiating a wheelie, trying to throw the bike over in the direction I want to go, lifting my outside elbow high and trying to look behind me. I know the looking well behind helps tremendously. I keep telling myself "elbow up" and on the approach I keep telling myself to load the inside peg. But I can still not get past about 90 degrees with out a dab to finish…

I thought the slo-mo of this was really useful to see just how the rider moves his body. https://amp.twimg.com/v/e9e71a02-9a17-43e4-8e6a-96b4939839ab

Highly embarrassing, but I can only hop right. I feel like a fish with one flipper cut off. I can basically go in a circle to my right, but when it comes time to go left, I give a few feeble front hops then promptly lose balance. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the pressure I'm putting on the pegs as relates to keeping the rear brake on, but for the life of me I can't see to figure out how to counteract it. Help!

  12. Started by trialtrial,

I just moved up a grade and things are a little tighter now. One area where I need improvement is front wheel lifts with little or no approach. I have no problem with wheel lifts when I have a comfortable run in, but when there is little or no room, I just "cant get it up" (he he). I am also progressing well with double blip - but again - only when I have a nice amount of room for the approach. Currently I dont use the clutch for front wheel lifts. I do the basic compress, blip, pull back. I have been told I need to add the clutch pop, to help with wheel lift in short approaches. So two questions: (1) can I get a couple of "simple old guy learning ne…

  13. Started by glynn,

Recently as my riding has progressed I have started learning front wheel hops and static balance, but no matter how hard I try I just cant get the rear wheel off the ground, or even lift it trying to do an endo with alot of front brake, the front brakes powerful and im throwing my weight forward, but can only get maybe a couple centimeters off the ground. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi guys, I'm training for the season and just having an hard time lifitng the rear wheel. I can get over a 70cm 90 degrees wall but I nearly roll up. I tap 15cm below the edge and then jump on top to deweight the rear but it doesn't want to come up enough. If I do it on a 50cm obstacle no probs but not higher. Any hints? Thanks

Hi everyone I'm fairly new to trials biking. I've done motocross most of my life so far. I am having difficulty approaching highish obstacles from a stand still. Every time i try slipping the clutch and popping it i either smash into the obstacle or just don't it right. Have you guys got any tips on how to tackle this problem Thanks

I'm thinking there are probably numerous threads on this, but I can't find them right now. I've seen numerous training videos on how to front wheel hops while staying in one place. Doesn't seem like they're doing me much good. I can stationary balance for a couple of minutes on a good day, but when I start hopping (whether from one foot down or from a stationary balance) I can, at the most, do about 5-6 hops before having to put my foot down. I'm definitely doing something wrong. Not only am I not able to keep hopping but I get winded after a few minutes of trying to get going over and over again. I imagine, if I were doing it correctly, it should use just a little bi…

  18. Since a group of us have gone nuts with trials riding the past year, it's also dramatically changed the way we ride our dirt bikes as we apply the trials techniques to the bigger heavier bikes. As a result, we've slowed down a lot, get less injuries. do far less damage to the environment and (hopefully) have become better riders as a result! If anyone is interested, we've been posting these vids and articles. we've started a website about cross training techniques as well here. Been watching a few videos on facebook, you tube etc of the current batch of WTC contenders. I cannot understand why they are still practising to balance, hop and bop, move sideways, backwards and never use flags. Looks good but a lot of 5s if it was a trial. Have the rules changed for 2016 - no flags and ride section anyway they want?

Anyone got pics of some good home garden or yard trials areas? I'm moving house, new place comes with a big lawn on a bit of a slope. Want to set it up for my novice riding and my kids 7 and under on their osets. Riding and more obstacles in place will keep the grass down too Cheers
