I am new to trials, really new. I just picked up my first bike this week. With that said I have a million questions but one of the most pressing is which gear should I be in. One of my friends that has been riding trials for awhile says he rarely gets out of first gear. I have read some tips that say you should be shifting up to third gear for getting over larger obstacles. Anyway, does anyone have a couple of tips?

Not really a motorcycle trials question, but.. I have an 11 yo who's sports mad (I also have a 13 yo whose idea of sport involves playstations). The 11 yo has a nice'ish BMX bike. So where can I look on the web for some sites that will describe tricks and techniques that he can practice on that bike to get him into trials. Sadly there's no cyclo trials scene in Auckland so that won't work nor am I going to spend NZD2,500 on a specialist trials bicycle until there's some indication of committment on his part. Billy, you'd probably have a good idea where to start.

I completely understand that there is no replacement for getting out on your bike and riding. but what are the best exercises, you can do in the gym through the week to help your fitness for riding at the weekend ? cardio? Strength training? Interval training? Combo?

Hi there, I have been riding trials for quite a while now 13 years in fact and have become quite good. But I am struggling with big vertical steps. My technique is to Wheely the front into the rock just below the top compressing my back suspension then trowing my weight forward throwing the bike up the step. This method only works if there is a kicker though. Would someone beable to tell me how to jump the back wheel up in to the rock first like the pros do making it easier to do bigger steps without a kicker??? Cheers lads and lasses

  6. I like this chap, but as this is an English language site have not shared with everyone my "find". However this has English subtitles and I found it very informative with the slo' mo' and breaking up into sections. It's better to watch without the subtitles as they obscure some of the vid. so you can re-run bits without the subtitles switched on as an option. Or brush up your French ?

interested to hear what you think of this,is this the best way to get up this size of step ? is this good for bigger steps ? he is 10 years old and doesn`t have much weight to transfer !

My best buddy (and riding buddy) are hours apart and seldom get to ride together, but we went out this weekend and he brought his camera. Riding with my son and best friend made for an incredible day!

Hello, I'm interested in the proper handle bar positioning, but all I find on the topic is to Position bars so they are in the optimum "middle position." What exactly is that??? Is this having the bars parallel to the forks or is this to have them in a vertical position to the fork angle. thanks, R

All: I am fairly new to trials. I have been studying up for a couple years waiting till I was able to get my first trials bike. Got the bike. love it to death it's everything I ever wanted. End of the first week on the bike I have a buddy over (4 wheeler rider mainly) and he decides to try some wheelies. Short version he gets into trouble doesn't grab the clutch and doesn't let go of the throttle. Result Rear fender minus about 3 or 4 inches, and the bars are bent all to hell. He lived. On to the important stuff. I take the bars off and proceed to bend them back (this was hard to say the least). Now the weather has gotten nicer and I am logging a lot more …

Hi, sorry the title should say 'trail' Debating whether or not to swap my road bike for a road legal enduro or trail bike. I went to a trial today and it was way too hard for me, mainly because of the terrain getting between sections. Steep muddy hills, 5 mile lap, very steep drops too. I lack aggression in my riding if that makes sense, I want to get comfortable with throwing the bike around and learn to use momentum more. I don't want to wear the trials bike out hence maybe getting something more suitable for longer distances. I have no intentions of giving up, though I don't have much talent or hope I want to keep learning. I know people say getting a trials bike …

I rode to the edge of my property to do some trial riding to break up the monotony of practicing in my back yard and came across a couple of logs at a steep angle to the trail. There isn't enough room on the trail to hit them perpendicular. How do you cross them without kicking the rear end out from under you or stepping down to pivot turn over them?

I came across this video and was wondering what this technique is. It looks like half of a double blip. Maybe a zap, but the more I read about the zap VS double blip, the more confused I am as to what the difference is. In this video, Mori-san pops the bike over a log by simultaneously revving the engine and letting go of the clutch. In some attempts there is a small bounce. He does the same thing over a rock. When going over the rock, the faster attempts look like a double blip to me. If you have the patience for videos you don't understand, this channel has some interesting content. Like a demonstration of riding an XT250 Serow up a rock taller than the bike i…

Trying to go from the floor straight to the back wheel being on the log (not sure if this a double blip or what?), anyway so far i'm managing to compress the forks on the log then i'm trying to spring the back wheel straight up, but as you can see in the video the back wheel isn't really jumping up. I can definitely feel that i'm making a difference to the back wheel as it seems like its gone really light and is floating over the log rather than banging in to it and hanging up. So what do I need to do here, is it just that I need to work on compressing the rear suspension more/harder/faster on the approach? http://youtu.be/j614SglIKOU The very first move in the video…

Help with obstacle Ive been trying to climb over a large concrete sewage pipe (3-4ft) I did manage it once in about twenty tries (think it was a fluke)! The problem is I can get both wheels on but end up going backwards / jumping off bike! Ive tried it in first and second gear, but I think I may be approaching it to slowly?

I might regret asking this but..... I was watching a you tube vid the other day of some guys green laning and they were really struggling with a long hill climb, ground was dry but steep and heavily rutted, tree roots etc and while they were struggling it looked like something I would climb up on the trials bike easily (and I'm crap as!!) This led me to wondering why its so hard on a trail bike/enduro, the tyres are as good if not better (wet grass, mud use etc) so is it the additional weight, the gearing not being as low as on a trials bike or is it the frame geometry and physical size that prevents you trickling up finding the grip? I've done a little bit of greenlan…

Has anyone made any homemade obstacles? i am tired of riding the same old rocks and logs on my property, and would like something i could possibly move around the driveway to practice in the evenings.
