Merry Christmas! Well the Sherpa is finally back together and after a short run up the road in a hailstorm all seems to be working OK. However, my initial difficulty in kickstarting the bike before I stripped her down remains. Surely it can’t be right that the kickstart (which is already high for my short legs) hits the frame (so much for new powder coating!) then the brake pedal and obviously the footpeg is also in the way and catches your heal even if you hitch it up? Is there a solution I.e. an alternative base pivoting or cranked lever that has some additional clearance? I’m used to kickstarting my T140V Bonneville but that doesn’t hit anything on the way do…

My best friend died in May (he was on here as Monoped) and has left behind his private collection of bikes that I am now looking after them on behalf of his daughter. He had what he always called his 'Miller Bultaco 350' which has a chrome frame with the number 715. A recent visitor to my place called into question that it is a Miller frame as there is no rear loop. On closer inspection, the brazing does look remarkably like that of Mick Whitlock and the footpeg mounts are identical to the Whitehawk. I don't want to misrepresent this bike when I come to sell it or under sell it if it is a more desirable/rarer model than the Miller. Can anyone shed any light on th…

Hi all, I have a 199B spitting fork oil out of the vent holes in the caps. I am used to a little around the holes but these are spitting oil onto the tank and engine etc. - Any ideas how to fix this? - How do the caps come apart to clean the vent valve? Thanks! Keep your feet up!

Hello, I started the project of rebuilding my my 1973 Sherpa. I’m quite young, without much previous knowledge. Regrettably. I’ve got the bike all apart. I’ve had the frame powder coated etc. However after taking the engine completely apart. With my lack of experience. I’m beginning to struggle and get overwhelmed. My hopes is to learn from this project and gain skills from it. So I don’t want to give up on what I’ve started. I’ve been using a few different manuals such as the Haynes one. I’ve bought some parts to replace, such as new gaskets, electronic ignition, clutch plates etc. However I don’t really know the key parts that should get replaced in a rebuild. The gears…

Hi everyone, I'm getting close to applying the decals to my tank and side panels. The sticker kit I have has some bits I'm not sure about. I've had a rummage through the undergarments of the internet but surprisingly can't find any close ups of the top of the tank. My bike is a M158. Does anyone know where the "sherpa" sticker goes? How about the "made in spain" sticker? Finally, the side cover stickers have an arrow next to the 250 text, yet all of the 158s I see photos of don't have that. I guess I should just cut that off? Cheers

Hi, I got a project starting soon to rebuild my old Sherpa T, it's in bits and is missing the exhaust and seat (possibly more) and the engine needs bigends done. Are parts available for these bikes any more? Cheers.

  12. Hey folk's.... Here's some links to my BULTACO SHERPA 199A that I just restored for riding purposes. I think it turned out FANTASTIC, not a museum piece, just a real classy rider !!! Happy Trials until next time...

  13. Can anybody help who has experience of Bultacos ? I understand that the Pursang fork springs are about 40mm longer than the Sherpa ones? are they the same spring rate? When i went to Malvern i noticed a couple of vendors selling "progressive rate" springs for Bultacos 35mm forks. Has anybody used them? Are they any good? Are they better than the std springs? Reason for asking is that i am trying to sort out the front forks on the James project. The Marzocci internals that Alan Whitton put into Norton outers for me feel a bit "oversprung" and after measureing the springs, there are two springs a short one and a longer one in each leg, they in total are about the same le…

Progressing very well through the Model 80 re-build and I starts to hear the little voice. You know the situation, you're rounding the final bend on to the home straight of your current progect and all you keep hearing is the little voice saying to you, "what are you going to do for your next progect"! Well the little voice got it's response, with the arrival into the garage yesterday of two boxes of bits containing 90% of a 199A. The missing parts won't be a problem as that well know purveyor of things Bultaco, has them listed on his wesite. But my question is this, as the bits/bike do not contain a carb, what is the best approach? Is it a case of getting a replacemen…

Hi there, I have recently bought a 199A, and whilst cosmetically it is very good, mechanically it has some issues. This is my first Bultaco, so some help would be much appreciated. There seems to be some funny goings on relating to the wheels. They seem to both be offset in the forks/swingarm. Is this normal or something more sinister afoot? The rear wheel rubs the swing arm unless adjusted out quite drastically. I am wondering if the hubs are from a larger bike etc. I am hopefully attaching some photos that will show the issue I'm having. Your advice is much appreciated, Thanks

Just stripped down the forks to overhaul and send the tubes off for re-chroming because they were pitted and one was leaking. Got rather a surprise to find that they are different lengths? one is 57cm and the other is 54.8!! Which one is correct (if either)? And what would be my best way forward considering I was looking at about £160 to get those ones re chromed? In Motion and SMP don't have them listed and a google search hasn't come up with anything apart from stuff in the US. I'm not sure how a bike can function with two different tube lengths but both the top nuts were different and only one had a spacer. one of the legs was filled with a unique oil and water cock…

Hi guys l have been having some great fun on my Sherpa 350 183 recently however I did a silly thing and left it outside for a few days and it got wet and stood there for a bit and so she didn’t start for a while. I re-cleaned the carb and renewed spark plug and it fired up BUT, the throttle cable was stuck on full whack and as I don’t have a kill switch on it yet it ran, full throttle for around 20-30 seconds before cutting out. I adjusted the throttle cable, and It re started moments later but then it came to a spluttering stop with a small backfire. Now it doesn’t start! I’ve tried a couple of new plugs, but nothing as of yet. Still plenty of compressi…

Hello All, I'm hoping for some suggestions on how to proceed with the exhaust on my latest project... I'm presently in the midst of an early M80 Sherpa T rebuild and am striving for original appearance yet with increased performance in the effort. I had one of these years ago and, like many, replaced the triangular muffler with an "S" pipe to a modern aftermarket spark arrestor which did perform better than stock but, to my eye, didn't look nearly as good - certainly not period correct, anyway. I eventually sold her to a friend to entice him into riding vintage trials with me and have missed the bike ever since. Such a beautiful tank design - truly a classic. …

Just about to start my 199A restoration project and I am wondering what is the best way to coat the frame. Would modern automotive paints offer a better finish than traditional powder coating? The reason I ask, is that during our Model 80 restoration (almost complete) I found that the powder coating chipped very easily.
