Pre-65 Bikes

Can anyone help, building a Trifield but not sure what swinging arm to use. The frame is 1958 but the existing swinging arm will only allow a 17inch rear wheel. Any ideas! And does anyone have one. Thanks JOJOTUT

Hi, Can anyone explain how to set up my bantam b175 so that it does not need a battery for the engine to run.It is used for trials so does not have lights etc,I am trying to make it as simple as possible without spending a fortune on electronic ignition, can the alternator be connected straight to the coil so I can remove the battery and regulator? Also does anyone know of a source for buying a tucked in high level exhaust or the right size of silencer required or is it just guess work? Thanks for any info replied.

My gearbox is worn out on my C15, can I replace all the g/box components with B25 items or are they different?

i had a slight off at the weekend at the Peak round at Bracken Rocks. Unfortunately i didnt get chance to throw myself under the tank to protect it from a nasty log. The result was quite ugly to look at and was leaking quite badly. On the way home i found the details of M.E.S.S http://www.messcheshire.co.uk and spoke to Dave there who told me he could sort it. Dropped it of on Tuesday morning, by 4pm it was ready. Fantastic service and a really good finish. he also does all kinds of ally welding and fin repairs etc.

What compression ratio should be targeted for a C15 intended for trials? It is a 1960 C15S. The available range seems to go from 6.5 to 10:1. It looks like early C15T had 6.5:1 and later models had 8:1.

My B40 currently has silent block swinging arm bushes. I've felt for a while that the rear suspension has a slightly dead feel to it, and wonder if replacing the bushes with same would improve it. Alternativly, having some bronze (?) bushes made up with grease nipples. Any thoughts / experience ? Thanks Ross

Hi people , Happy new year . Having trouble with a villiers gear box i'm assembling , 4 speed 9e to 37a type . I have a lot of in and out play on the main shaft , all looks good comparing with a parts book , but should it have anything between the pressure washer and high gear ?? this would take up the play ..Any advise

Can someone please confirm what items are legal for pre65 scottish. I am rebuilding my cub at present and would like to keep within these regulations. i hope at some time in the future to compete in the event. I know I am stirring up a hornets nest but I need to know.

Hi - I'm new to the forum and new to the pre '65 movement. Saw the demo at the Historic motor sport show and it re-awakened old urges. I've acquired an unmolested '59 Francis barnett Trials 83, which needs new tyres. I can't find a 19" trials tyre anywhere. Millers advised me to build a new wheel with an 18" rim. Is this the only way? Any help would be appreciated

Hi: I pretend to race with this bike in the next Scottish Pre-65, last year I burned the ignition where beaking down is a nightmare; Meall Na Cruaidhe, fortunately it has now a good ignition fixed. I have the next the next troubles with it; 1.- Rear mudguard, I can not find an alloy rear mudguard for this bike, they are either short, too wide or too narrow. This one is built out of 2 plastic bultaco mudguards, but would like to put something more original. Maybe Spain is not the place to look for this mudguard. 2.- Is there any webb where to buy sprockets for it?? I have come across a BSA motorcycle that the current owner believes is a mid 60' BSA MX motorcycle. It is almost all there (in boxes of course) how do I tell which model it was? I believe the engine is a 441 from my limited BSA knowledge. The tank is alloy with a Blue stripe, seat looks like a trials seat. No lights or indication it ever had lights. Did BSA make a trials bike in that era? I am looking for a 60's vintage BSA/ Triumph/ AJS for vintage competition. Has any done a BSA MX to trials conversion? Does it make sense? I wonder if someone could tell me how to get the little clutch operating pinion off the clutch lever, I know its threaded onto it and I've had a go at trying to get it off but it wont shift. Is there a trick to it or maybe its a left hand thread? The clutch lever is the one that sits behind the kickstart sort of vertical in the right hand case (timing side) its a very sloppy fit as there seems to be no bushing in the worn alloy case , any suggestions on how to correct the sloppy fit? any advice greatfully accepted.

Hi all doing a bantam engine and I cant remember what gears I swop from mainshaft to lay shaft I think its main shaft 3rd with lay shaft 2nd the ones fixed with the circlip not the sliding gears . I wrote down the number of teeth 26 to22 and 25 to 21 but cant remember if its the fixed or sliding gears . Many thanks Martin

Hi all, so I have ended up with a C15 Road bike in my garage ready to convert into a trials bike. I realise that it will never be as good as an Otter or Drayton framed bike but it's all I've got to play with at present. So what I want to low is what hubs do I use to get laced to the 19 rear and 21 front rims, do I use the C15 hubs that I have or do I use something different? Do I use the C15 forks or enter the minefield of Fork / yoke /wheel options? Bearing in mind I would like to maybe upgrade to an Otter / Drayton frame one day. After todays outing and after letting someone else try the B40, who at least knows what they are doing, it transpires that as i felt the rear shocks on the B40 need sorting. The ones fitted are "Mick Andrews Classic" ones with the black springs and either the spring rate is too heavy or the damping rate is. So do i put them on E bay and fit something else if so what? I was thinking either Betor, heard you can specify the spring rate, Rock Shocks, hear they are around again but dont know where to get them, NJB Trick Shocks , again allegedly you can specify length spring rate etc. Anybody used them on a Pre 65 B40 ?
