Riding Hints, Tips and Tricks

  1. Started by soloman,

Ok, sorry for being really dumb, but i'm new to this trials thing and have seen loads of references on technique, stating..."be like a tree" Just wondering if someone could give me an explanation as to what it means?? Thanks in advance. Steve

  2. Hi there - thought for a long time about asking this at the risk of being told

  3. Started by totty79,

I was working on this yesterday, but when doing a back to back comparison of covered vs ball of foot on the peg I looped it again (when not covered). I was riding a hill with rocks on it at Warden Law, they're spaced awkwardly so you have to keep the front up. I can't get past half way with the brake covered but I've twice made it to the top without covering. I've also previously bust my ribs on it. The problems when covering the brake seem to be absorbing the rear wheel impact and also keeping in a straight line. The problem when not covering the brake is easier to understand, when I get it wrong on the throttle I can't save it and it tends to hurt. Downhill rear bra…

  4. OK...I admit it...I suck and I'm flummoxed. What I can do, though, is get up onto obstacles that are big enough to make going down the other side front-wheel-first very scary. This is especially scary on logs that are up off the ground. Imagine a concrete highway divider...having the front wheel dive down when the rear hits would be a guaranteed trip over the bars. Don't ask how I know. How to carry the front wheel instead of nose diving off the other side? I can't even get it on small (18" or so) logs.

  5. Hi, I've read a lot of posts here and elsewhere and watched a few videos, I'm now a bit confused as to what to practise first and looking for advice. I've been riding bikes for around 22 years but I've only had 2 1/2 hours on a trial bike last night at Warden Law. It's clear that I need to pick up a few basic skills before I've got any hope of clearing any obsticles. I spent a bit of time just getting used to being off road again and to the bike but I still find the power delivery, lack of bike between the knees, the feel of the clutch and the size and feel of the back brake all a bit odd. I practised lifting the front wheel, 10 foot barely in control wheelies weren'…

Hi all, Had a good practice session this morning. I've bought a set of flags and have been setting up sections where I practice. Very good way to train by the way At any rate I set up some gates on a 2nd/ 3rd gear hill, rough going with stones, humps and bumps etc. Included several turns across a camber. I could clean the section going up hill but hit a bit of a brick wall attempting it down hill. Any advice for turning down hills? Panic set in, I tended to brake too hard on the front and sit down. I feel like my weight is too far forward and I'm going to fall inwards and down the hill. Where should your weight be when turning down across a camber? Is it wise to go …

  10. Hey all, so I come from a background of enduro riding and rmec racing, so nothing super tough. Im not a skilled rider, just your basic trail, single track and "rougher" enduro rider. Many times, I still sit on rocky terrain and obstacles (to give you an idea of my riding level). As some of you know I am starting off with a trials 300 txt gasgas, and I have no idea where to begin or do ha ha. so here are some questions. Yes I know youtube has a lot of videos, but I still feel like I need to build up to get there. Im hoping one day I can meet a trials rider in Colorado so they can show me how to start. As of now, I dont think many events are taking place since its winter. H…

I guess this isn't really a Montesa question in general. I have a 06' Montesa 4RT, I am a beginner, started to do figure 8, using two flags, as I get better will move them closer, my question is this, where the bike idles high, I have my index finger on clutch and front brake, as I go through my process, all I have been doing is using the clutch and front break a tad, NOT USING THROTTLE, is this correct? Or should I be using throttle? Thanks Philip

Hi all. As the title says..... Sometimes my clutch finger locks out straight. Which at the top of a big blast up a hill can be a problem, resulting in some unsightly mess sometimes. Does this happen to anybody else? What the f... am I doing wrong?

Hi All I am a 58 years old average trials rider...been riding off and on since 17. Now I generally ride once or twice a month on a Beta Rev 3. But about a year ago in a trial suddenly suffered from severe cramp in the right hand/wrist when exiting a section, instant full throttle action!! Thankfully I use a lanyard cut out so no great drama's. Although surprised a few spectators and especially me! Completed the trial but had to rest the wrist/hand before each section..although a couple of 3's resulted from complete lack of confidence. I think it is partly psychological now but seems to be getting much worse, because of that I am gripping tighter,…

Hi, So today I had my 1st ride of any bike with gears it was a bit of an eye opener I got on ok I suppose I just wanted to do the basics start and stop, however I had a bit of an issue letting go of the throttle when my weight shifted back and ending up with the bike in a ditch and me thrown over the bars 😂

I live in Leeds, but will be in Scarborough most weekends until June this year. Where is a legal place to ride in/ very close to Scarborough. I do not want to join a club out there, just want some where to have a play. Cheers

  20. Started by mcman56,

I have arthritis in both thumbs. The trapezium bone has been removed in one hand and pending in the other. Some knuckles are not in great shape either. Both hands and wrists are getting quite sore from riding and stay that way afterward. I would think modern suspension would be better but my Beta 4t is harder on my hands than my TY175. On the beta I'm constantly on the clutch and front brake plus ride bigger obstacles. (I did put thinner oil in the forks.) On the TY I'm mostly on throttle only and suspect the skinny forks flex around to help cushion things. I do try to minimize hand pressure when riding. I have thought of an electric bike because you don't need …
