Twinshock

  1. Started by markmaltby,

Is it normal for the clutch to drag on a Montesa Cota 200 as no amount of adjusting seems to cure it.

Does anyone know the frame numbering sequence for the 340 Sherpas modified by Comerfords?. I saw a 340 recently that looked like and was claimed to be a Comerfords bike. It had the forward top mountings for the rear shocks and the larger s/a mounting plates to take the swinging arm forward to within a few mm of the engine casing but the swinging arm itself was of heavy oval tube and I thought they had rectangular ones made by Whitehawk. Or maybe that was an extra?. How many 340s were made in total?. Sorry, must have pushed the go button twice or something, maybe Andy can remove this post, please.

I am considering a twinshock bike and have it narrowed down to a TY or a KT-250. The reason for these two is availability. I figure parts will be hard enough to get so that is a concern. What positives and negatives should I be aware of for these two bikes?

Evening all,its been bothering me since Sunday that I did the first lap of a trial for 1 dab. That dab was a silly one,and I thought the next three laps I ought to clean it,(and hopefully the rest of the trial.) but stared to slowly lose marks 1/2 way through the second lap.I must of finished on about 12 or 15,still really enjoyed it and I started feeling tired during the last lap.I was in a good relaxed frame of mind,no booze and an early night before.Since I've started riding the A route I've started to take it all a bit more seriously, and Sunday's ride really made me think.I was able to do the sections but not for four laps,OK maybe if I was a bit fitter then the last l…

  6. OK for those that dont know i do the report for the Peak Classic Trials Club for publishing in T&MX News and always post the same report here on Trials Central in the Trials Reviews forum. As i dont feel that forum is necessarily the best place for a debate i thought it prudent to reply to a members posting but i thought it best to do it here. Majdaz wrote. "Hi Paul, In respect to your well worded and much appreciated review of the recent Peak Classic July trial, I'd just like to ask why the win for Simon Foulke in the twinshock class was controversial. I agree parts such as the engine and front end are ty mono, but the rear portion of the bike is a standard twi…

I was sent his link to probably the finest twinshock video footage i've seen in years. It's of fantic's, Bultacos and swms at the italian world round and the fantic factory . It really captures the 70's feeling and has some cool riding and a mean looking section. Slightly off topic but i'm sure you guys will like it.It takes a bit to download but well worth the wait. Go to http://www.fanticmotorlegend.it and then FANTIC PAGES .....then videos and then click on the trials links

  9. The carb on my Montesa Cota is worn out and distorted. The bike is a 1972 Montesa Cota 247 frame number 21M8xxx (mk4 silver frame). It currently has an Amal Mk1 627/414 which doesn't seem to be listed on the Amal website, is this really a Cappra or scorpion carb? I'd like to replace the Amal, can anyone advise what the correct carb is for that year i.e. 627/427 etc? The Amal site offers a number of options for a '72. I'd like to keep it simple and original and stay with the Amal. Thanks

While my TLR waits for completion, I have turned my attention to finishing up my model 49 Sherpa T. I have seen photos of this model with a silver frame and some with a black frame. Anyone know which is the stock color?

Hi All I have a Cota 123, complete except for the piston which has a broken skirt. I can get an original part but I'll have the hassle of posting it here. Does anyone know of another (Japanese?) piston that might match? Thanks in advance. David in Johannesburg

Hi All I have two Cota 123's and a Cota 172 which will form the basis of two finished bikes. One 123 and the 172 frame have broken at the front downtube at some stage (and been badly repaired). Were the frames known to be weak and if so, does anyone know a strengthening fix for them? Thanks in advance David

I picked up a nice clean Montesa Cota 172 this past summer. Spent a little time on the bike, but had problems with kick start.(I understand this is common problem) I was given one of the old kick start shafts along with the bike as an example of what happens as the shaft twists. Is there an after market shaft out there made of a better grade of steel? I have one shaft (unbroken but twisted) and another that is twisted off. Also looking for ideas on bike set up and mods to make a good rider for AHRMA. Keith

Hi, I hope someone can help! I have a 1980 Cota 200, the kickstart works fine but when you manually turn the flywheel the kick mechanism can be heard to ratchet on the pawl. I have removed the cover and cant see anything missing or amis! Has any one else got one and is this normal? The bike starts and runs great. Any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks.

Hi lads hope you will be able to help me out. I have a Montesa cota 200 and have a bit of a problem with the gearbox on it. When riding up hill it has a tendency to jump out of gear, has anyone had similar problems on this bike and if so what was it. I had an Ossa that had a similar fault and it was the spring for the detent plunger had snapped, is there a one of these fitted to this bike or is it a different system. Any help would be gratefully received. Cheers Glenn

The Cota from hell has unleashed a new fault, the Flywheel boss is ever so slightly loose! I can feel a bit of rotational play only between the steel boss and the outer. Will it sort of rivet tight again using a punch and hammer??? Does anyone know the method of contruction of these?? Will a Motoplat flywheel of another bike fit? perhaps a 248 349 of similar age or even Bultaco or Ossa and would balancing be an issue? The part number on mine is 063025 6V40/9/21W33. Thanks Ian
