Finally finished the re-build, engine runs really smoothly and now sounds like a Bultaco - vast improvement. Tank is ali and holding petrol, helicoil seems to have doen the trick. Anyone spot the obvious mistake? Thanks for your help and advice. Dunc

I just inspected the clutch on my 199A and found that the clutch plates use no friction material, just steel on steel. They were in pretty good shape so I put it back together with 75wt synthetic gear oil and it works well. I'm just wondering if that is the original type clutch and if there are any special oil recomendations for it. I know you guys will know.

Hi, I have just joined this site and looking for some help sorting out my recently acquired Bultaco198A, 250 Sherpa as the bike is running weak. I have tried another Amal type 2 carburettor, I replaced the following: all the jets to original spec, throttle slide, crank case seals, intake rubber, air filter, spark plug and the engine will not run unless the choke is on. It has electronic ignition and starts fine. I appreciate any ideas or experiences that you may have. Thanking you in advance Graham

When I was 15 my father bought a brand new Bultaco Sherpa, needless to say I spent more time on it than he did due to his work commitments. I loved it, super reliable and great to ride. Come forward 40 odd yrs and this (what I thought was a Sherpa) came up for sale locally at a reasonable price. it's all there, yes needs some work and a restore/rebuild but it doesn't look too bad. After checking the engine and frame number it seems it's an early Alpina M-8500619 and 9700356. I have had a quick search and it seem that these early Alpinas are basically a Sherpa with slightly different gear ratios. So here are my questions, I know this is the place to ask. Does it look…

Hi all just returning a heavily modified 199b back to original and seem to have a clutch problem, first off the clutch arm has been extended (more throw, lighter action maybe) and also with both balls and rod in position to set up centre adjuster I screw in to just touch top hat and back out 1/4 turn, but it only leaves about 3 threads on centre pin, not good, I'm thinking the rod is too short maybe, I would like to see some threads above nut face at least, any measurements would be helpful, clutch is operating OK, or maybe a problem at the lever side🤔 Cheers.

Hi guys, Just bought a 1979/80 198 A 250, it has electronic ignition. I've bought a new spark plug which I've been advised needs a gap of 0.4mm, but when I ordered it I didn't say it had electronic ignition. Is there a different gap setting for each. Also the bike runs and starts well on choke but dies when the choke is turned off. I've had the carb apart and found 150 main jet. 20 pilot jet. 3 slide. 2b1 needle 106 main jet. I've had carb cleaner through each and every orifice, because I thought it would have been a blocked pilot jet. The previous owner has owned it for years but hasn't really used it for a few years. I've drained and flushed the tank and go…

Hello, I have recently bought a Bultaco with SM high boy frame; I did it not because I hope that his frame is much better than the standard one but because I believe that it is a peculiar bike in trials history. The bike I bought is rather a patchwork: engine, forks, hubs are a nice collection coming from several bikes and so the problem is: how was the original bike? Even I'm not totally crazy about each original screw of the bike (especially when prices are rising at stars) I'd like at least to have the right engine, wheels and suspensions. A fast search on the internet (this fantastic source of informations that so often provide us of good informations) didn't give me …

Hi All, Just aquired a Bultaco 198-A I think? to restore. I was told by the seller that the bike has been in a shed for 30 years [And it looks like it]. I am after confimration of which model I have got and a few other questions. The frame Number is RB 198 03580-A Engine number is RM 198 03580-A There are no bottom frame tubes but a factory looking alloy bash plate fitted. Also the rear frame tube is missing and looks as if it is an original alteration. It looks like the 199A Bultaco on the In motion Bike ID page. I will be looking for a Rear Wheel and Brake Plate as there was an unknown wheel fitted very badly in the bike. I wil…

Is the 340 front pipe unique to this model, or is it the same as other 350 models. The one on my 340 is serviceable but has some dents , I know you can get these out but I'd rather put the money towards a replacement than renovate what I have. Thanks.

Hi, I have a Sherpa 340, which I'am rebuilding, the bike is in a let's call it good condition beside of some parts. One of the main issues are the side cases where some alumium of the embelms are broken off, (can be fixed with fluid / kned metal). My concerns are the impacts that are visible and caused cracks on both side cases. I searched already E-Bay, dealers worldwide for gettimg replacement cases, but did not found any. Here are some pic's of the cases outside: Now the problem inner sides, (the cracks to the clutch side are not so good visible (only one of three!): As visible the case structure on both sides is weakend a lot. I could by a second bike …

Sounds like an election year question, eh? I'm getting a serious jones for a Sherpa, but I already have 4 different shift/clutch/throttle configurations in the herd, and another just might send me over the edge. Actually...I no longer have a right-foot shifter, so, in some sick way, it might round out my "collection". I do have a left-hand throttle that's good for some very scary moments because the right grip twists too (spark control). Anyway...I know all street bikes had to shift on the left starting in '75, is this the case for offroad stuff, too? I also know that it was a quickly-made rule that caught even HD by surprise, and their first couple years of left-…

Hi all, A friend of mine just offered me a Bultaco Sherpa 350T It's a 74 / 75 Model In Red and Silver. He stripped it several years ago and rebored the cylinder, painted the frame and other bits but there it has sat in boxes since. As far as I can tell the only major item missing is a seat. It's being offered at

Hi I need a new L/H Crank Case and Magneto Casing, will any other model in the range work? The old ones have been battered by a chain snapping. Will the 158 fit? Do I have to do anything to make any other case in the range fit? I don't want to have to start cutting it about and welding etc. Just trying to broaden my options. Cheers Mick

Hi I have just got myself a 198b in what looks to be very original condition. I will be using the bike for easy trials as I'm not the best of riders. I have a 199a that is a bit too highly geared, if I remember correctly it's got 11/39 gearing ( I'll check this is correct). The 250 needs new chain and sprockets, so before I go any further could anyone give me their thoughts on what works best for them on this bike. I have tried to post some really dodgy pictures of the bike. Any thoughts, good or bad would be appreciated.

Hallo . This is my first post. I would appreciate it I could pick your brains guys. I´m in the process of stripping my Alpina type 188 350 engine down which is sitting in a 159 chassis. I bought it about a year ago and had a fair bit of trouble getting it to run properly since. I have done several trials on it so far but its constantly giving me starting troubles. Over the last year its broken a woodruff key on the ignition side (fitted with electronic) Then another time, a primary chain tensioner broke. Now, again it has stopped running...possibly due to the flywheel on the clutch side? Im pretty sure it was in one piece the last time I checked! I am starting…
