I recently acquired (and tonight, got running!) an 84 TY250 mono from Canada, but I'm in the states. It was brought over for use at someone's camp, and has clearly seen better days. But: it seems to have good compression, is mechanically in decent shape, and looks like crap. I've got some exhaust leaks to sort out, and it seems the muffler is full of muddy old oil. Is there a way to clean it out? Take it off, flush with gas and let air dry for a few days maybe? I'm not sure, and not willing to try that yet. I didn't see any convenient cleanout plates. Maybe an aftermarket replacement for the whole assembly? Mine's dented, and brazed, and epoxied, and in generally…

Hi all ... I was just out in my shop with my boys talking trials bikes ... As some of you may know I just did a ground up on a 74 ty80 that I obtained for my youngest son ... And of course my middle child (2yrs older) parked his 89?xr 100 after he WAY overrevved it and got it to bend some valves ... But this thought came into my feeble mind ! What if I used the XR wheels and forks and built my own whitehawk TY80 ! I'd have to lengthen the swingarm abit to clear the 16' back wheel , and a little creative bearing application and the forks should work ... And the fresh / tweeked ... ty80 motor has more than enough to spin the larger wheels ... AND chen shin make trials ti…

Well, I manageged to find me a Serow today, should make as good of a trials bike as anything once I build a new frame! Not sure how they will think of the electric start in the sections? I just think of is as my big bore Scorpa project! Yet, I need to loose the front disc to become ITSA legal! Jay, watch out! Anyone have any shocks?

OK how longs a piece of string. Bought a standardish TY250 twinshock off ebay as a "project" standby bike for when the others are W.I.P. and i want a ride. OK shes not pretty but doesnt owe me a lot and mostly all there. Now i've measured the wheelbase and it's 50" there's 13.5" ground clearence and it rides and steers fine. So is it worth the hassle and effort of cutting and shuting the frame to lift the engine a la Majesty?

Guys, So after getting my parts back from Millenium Technologies- new bore on Ebay cylinder and new piston- I noticed quite a bit of vibration. So today I tore it down again and weighed the new piston, pin, upper end bearing and compared those weights to the ones on the original parts. As I expected, the new piston was significantly heavier than the old original piston, even though the piston size was still the same. Old Piston 213 gm New piston 241gm a delta of 28 grams. Old pin 57 gm New pin 60 gm delta of 3 grams The remainder of the parts were too light to measure on the scales I borrowed, so I am forced to ignore those …

Hi, I am toying with the idea of converting my Yamaha Pinky to twinshock. The main reason is so that I can ride some neighbouring club trials in twinshock class. Our club HEREFORDSHIRE CLASSIC TRIALS CLUB runs an a/c mono class but the neighbours dont. Is there anyone out there who has done the same, and if so is it much hassle. I ask because the swingarm doesn't have a lot of meat in it, unlike a box section as on a TLM 200, a mate of mine converted his to twinshock in no time. Thanks.

I just picked-up a really nice 1978 TY250E. It's in great cosmetic condition and it starts easily, idles well and has a ton of compression. However, for a 250cc 2-stroke trials bike it seems to be a bit lacking in low end power. I figured that a bike would loop itself in first gear if it was given full gas and a good pull on the bars. On my bike - it takes a lot of effort to get the wheel just a foot off the ground. Part of this is poor rider technique, but I have other 2 stroke bikes and when they are in the power band - they rev-up like crazy! I posted a couple of videos below so you can see what I mean. It might be my expectations are too high for a bike with a h…

So another general question- #2 I have OKO 26mm on my TY 250 A and still trying to get the best operation out of it. It starts on about the 5th kick when cold, but when hot you need to open the throttle to maybe 1/3rd to get it to catch. There is no longer any kick back - but that is mostly due to the new Rex's ignition. But my concern now is that if you are just running on flat ground, the engine will fire every other revolution. This is annoying because of the vibration that is set up while this is going on. If you advance the throttle, the engine fires every stroke and smooths out, or uphill- same thing sounds solid and smooth- , but you onl…

hello friends, sorry to be a nuisance but was hoping if someone would confirm that the original gearing on a '74 ty250A is 14/53....i often see it said 13/53 was the original gearing? the bike has 12/53 on it now. my question is, if i put a 14 on the front how many link chain would i need..is it 110 or 114? would the bike then suck at trials tho? seeing as im going through the hassle of getting it road legal be good to keep up with traffic! many many thanks from an mechanically ignorant green horn in NYC!

What is the correct procedure for setting the points gap? I had the primary stator coil give up the ghost this spring.I then put the lighting coil in its place along with a new set of points and condenser.Checked for spark, which was good and back in the corner she went until last weekend. It was very reluctant to start and when it briefly did it sounded really out of time so I shut it down and took the Sherpa T. Maybe there are other problems in my using the lighting coil, but I would like to make sure that I have the points set correctly before anything else. I think the way that I did it was to turn the flywheel until the points looked to be fully ope…

Here are a few photos that some of you may find interesting. I am sure that most of you know that in the early 1980s Majesty produced two works bikes fitted with works Yamaha 250cc, OW10 engines (from the 1973 cantilever bike), one for Mick Andrews and the other for John Hulme. the bike that Mick andrews rode is well documented but Johns bike is not, so for the first time in nearly thirty years here are photos of Johns bike. It is now up and running and ready to be restored after being stored in boxes inside my old Hen house all of that time (1988) the bike is in original condition apart from the brake lever, tyres, cables, and paint. I would just like to say a big Thank…

So now it looks like the crankshaft is out of tolerance for "Deflection Tolerance". Basically the crank is "spun" as the engine rebuilders like to say.. So in simpler terms, the left end of the crank is not lined up with the right end. The tolerance in the shop manual is only 0.0012" per side and I've got .005" of runout total. Does anyone have any experiance with "tapping" the crank halves back into alignment?

So it came out like you all said, WD-40, a mallet and a little patience. I have to be honest, the barrel and piston look to be in GREAT shape. . . i think. Ive added a couple pics of the piston and i'll do the same when I clean out the barrel. How's it look to you guys?? So whats next? I wasnt able to get the crank shaft moving?? Could the bottom end be siezed also? How can I check? If I can get the crank to move up and down, im going to be REAL excited! So any advice on where to go next? How can I get the crank to move? Turn the wheel? Kick start wouldn't move it. . . Piston pics, any thoughts? Im going to shop for new rings, piston and all that Jazz pretty …

Hello, I bought this bike about a year ago to ride in Trials competition. Instead of just restoring it back to original condition, I wanted something that looked a little different, and this is my end result. I haven't touched the wheels yet, but I think I'm going to polish the hubs, anodize the rims black, and lace them up with stainless spokes and nipples. What are the main differences between the 2 bikes ?? In terms of - Handling Finding grip Riding position Likes/Dislikes Is the Yamaha better built than the Scorpa Are the motors exactly the same in terms of power/porting Was the TYZ a dog or is still a good bike today I've never ridden either, just like the look of the TYZ TYZ Frame looks as if it shares some similarities with the later Cota 315R ......Does it?? Can you still find TYZ's in good nick or are they flogged to death like most TY250 mono's Were they built between 92-96 or did they go later to 98 Just wondering.........????
