General Trials Talk

Today I took part in my first ever trial (along with my son who is 8) The trial was run by Leamington Victory Motorcycle Club at Victory fields Warwickshire (which rather conveniently is just down the road from my house) We were both made to feel very welcome and had a great day, my son even managed to clear the first section (and I didn't) !! From today I have learnt .... tyre presssures really matter in this game ... and gear selection (it was wet muddy and very slippy) Looking forward to the next one now.

I'm not a novice to bikes, having raced motocross for 25 years, but am certainly completely new to Trials having never lifted a leg over a Trials bike. So, in my quest to find a decent second hand machine I have come across a 2009 Sherco 290 that someone local to me owns and has genuinley never used so it's as good as new. Looks great, sounds great and seems to ride fine given the short pootle up and down his driveway. i'm very tempted as will be a genuine bargain but my concern is that it will just be too much bike for my zero Trials experience. Hi, coming from having road bikes all my adult life, and being a m/c mechanic and machinist, I know about chains and lube. But, now I've got into trials bikes as well, i'm in a dilemma about lubing the chains on my two ty250 mono's. Where I ride, the soil is almost like a lime, sandy condition. Whatever is put on the chain, either proper aerosol Silkolene chain spray, or g/box oil from an oil can spout just on the rollers, it's just like flies being attracted to sh... Anything will attract the sand. So. lately I've been running the chains dry, no lube and giving them a brush down post ride. At 12 quid for a new length of brand name chain locally, this seems my b…

Hi all,anybody tried the new 2017 IRC tubeless rear tyres?Do they hold air and stay on the rim OK?Are they still the best in the mud,or are they still best avoided.Thanks in advance

I'm looking for some advice, I have a montesa 315 r which I have used for the last year on my first year on a trials bike. It seems to need constant repairs so maybe its time for a newer bike. Have been looking for something around a year old but most seem to be 280-300 in size. Do you lot think it is ok for a relative novice to go to this size bike or should I stick to something smaller. Any pointers would be great as have not tried other brands so you lot are my only hope;-) the betas and shercos look popular but I do like the TRS but don't seem to find that many reviews for them. Hi guys...can someine tell me how the aftermarket tank that mounts to the top o the forks works...wat pipe goes on the breather fur the tank on the bike..n when connected does it sook fuel from that first or the tankas its on a vacum..id imagine it uses the built in tank first..but wat pioe goes where..n wat one does the breathing...thanks

I have a set of 40mm Marzhocchi forks on my bike (non-stock). It requires the ‘pin’ type wrench to remove the caps. Anyone know where to source one? Mark

I recently started a thread asking about a trials bicycle for cross training and the opinions were divided! I got an ECHO Mark IV 26" anyways and after riding for few weeks I was not so sure that the bicycle can really improve skills in the motorcycle. Yeah... we all know it improves balance, but other than that, the bicycle is still a lot of fun and great exercise which ultimately will improve athletic ability. The bike has been sitting for 8 yrs. The bike is like New and the carb was clean as can be. I have no problem kicking it over without the plug in. As soon as I put the plug in, It locks the kick starter in the top position. After 5-6 tries to kick over , it will kick over with lots of compression. After one kick thru , it locks up again for 5-6 kicks. The kick starter feels like it is totally locked it the top position when it takes 5-6 tries. I’m afraid that I will break the kick starter shaft. I also don't have a spark? Do you have any ideas on this? Thanks again Jerry

I know the question has been asked over and over but I would like a little more details: My bike is a 2017 GG 250. I was using full synthetic ATF. and read somewhere here that this can promote some clutch dragging due to high viscosity?? is it correct? I have noticed that I have quite a bit of a drag lately and I already adjusted levers to the point that The "Clutch on" is farther than I would like on the release of the lever. still drags I m working a lot on "fakies" this week, or "roll backs" whatever you call it, and my bike stalls often unless I m on Third gear. Wasn't I suppose to "fakie" even on first gear without an issue?? The clutch on my GG f…

I'm hoping to start some easy club trials next year and in the mean time I would like to get involved in some observing, could someone advise me on the scoring, I know that 1 dab = 1 2dabs = 2 and footing = 3 stopping with feet down =5, but what about stopping and reversing with feet up and other technical tricks, I remember back in time that the front wheel spindle had to be moving forward or it was a 5 but has it changed in club trials.

Does anyone own or has made an obstacle course on a trailer? Any pics or ideas out there? I have an old but strong flat bad trailer to carry farm equipment and am going to convert it to an obstacle trailer. Kinda those that they use on trials shows like Pat Smage or Jack Price... obviously, my obstacles will be to my skill level. Just something to park on my parking lot by my business on a Saturday afternoon and play around. The advantage of doing this would be to have a nice clean approach to train techiniques and lots of grip on a newly paved parking lot!! I m very excited about it. Hi Say a trial consists of 3 laps of 7 sections. Is it allowable for a single rider to double up or possibly triple up the sections so to only do one lap? understandable if ALL riders have been given permission in trial briefing In my eyes this is cheating as in that this rider is remembering lines and repeating straight away without forgetting a section Also the ground conditions can be less torn up or stones become wet or muddy as this rider is riding on a possible one lap so misses a lot of damage to section find by the rest of the field of riders Are they any written rules re this matter? Simple question. How much faster is the fast throttle? What are the advantages and disadvantages of slow and fast. I'm riding a montesa 260 4rt. Ordered a fast domino to try out so I'll find out on my own soon enough but would appreciate some feedback and opinions on this subject.✊️

Putting my bike back together and unsure how much slack to have in the chain. Any easy way to get it right? Also in the picture is the tensioner bolt, i took the picture before taking it all apart. That's when I noticed that the chain rubs the bolt. Should there be a gap? Cheers Richard

Morning folks, Newbie question so please bear with me. My bike has a 48 tooth sprocket on the rear and I want to put it back to a 42. Question is do I have to alter the chain length? Ideally I would like to keep the chain as it is so I can always put the 48 back on if it alters it too much Cheers Richard
