I need help from you Bulto experts(please)! What is the best way to achieve a one finger clutch operation on a 199?Years ago I used a front brake actuating arm on the clutch to give more leverage(but I'm struggling to get hold of one at the moment!!!)and also backed off the clutch nuts at the expense of clutch slip when pulling a high gear.I can probably rig up a lever system in order to give some mechanical advantage,as I have on my B40 but on the Bult it will be difficult to package it neatly.Any suggestions? Also,is it worth replacing the Bing carb with perhaps a Mikuni?Your replies are appreciated!

Hi All, There are a couple of electronic ignition systems available for the Sherpa, but which is best? Has there ever been a test or are they pretty similar? I would probably opt for a system from Bultaco UK because the guys have been brilliant for parts, help and advice during my rebuild, but what about Rex Caunt? I've seen systems from the States with lightened flywheels which I think I wouldn't want. Or do I? I've read comments here which indicate quite a change in engine characteristics, is that accurate? I don't need lighting. Lots of questions, your thoughts are appreciated. Many thanks.

I gentleman over on TeamBultaco (Yahoo Group) posted these pictures. With his permission I'm reposting them here. Does anyone know the history behind this bike? Were they ever produced?

Hello all, I have been riding a 1966 250cc Bultaco Matador in the USA AHRMA trials Classic Class for some time. My Bike handles OK on the milder events but when the going gets tough its a real pig. Any thought on how I can get the bike to behave in the rough? Thanks, Dave

Hi I am restoring my 73 Bultaco Sherpa 250, and need new rear shocks. Looking around NJB, Betor and Falcon all supply shocks that will do. The setup and rebuildability of the Falcon shocks appeals, but realistically for me, possibly an unneccesary expense. Does anyone have any advice or opinions on which shock would give the best performance and value for money. Regards

I've recently acquired a very late model 199b. Likely one of the last dozen built. In any case like most of these bikes the chrome lining has peeled off both brake drums. Over the years on this forum and elsewhere I've read how good the puma or Vazquez brakes are. My question is this. Where is the cast iron sourced from? What size can you get it in. I have a machinist that can install it but we are having issues on where to buy the material. Any thoughts ? Steve

Can anybody help who has experience of Bultacos ? I understand that the Pursang fork springs are about 40mm longer than the Sherpa ones? are they the same spring rate? When i went to Malvern i noticed a couple of vendors selling "progressive rate" springs for Bultacos 35mm forks. Has anybody used them? Are they any good? Are they better than the std springs? Reason for asking is that i am trying to sort out the front forks on the James project. The Marzocci internals that Alan Whitton put into Norton outers for me feel a bit "oversprung" and after measureing the springs, there are two springs a short one and a longer one in each leg, they in total are about the same le…

Saw this one linked from Todotrial yesterday. A few interesting mods and still looks like a Sherpa. Link Then select "Reportaje Sherpa " Seems like he's possibly using Alpina Yokes for less to zero offset and no tiller steering. Interesting exhaust setup. Obviously ridden by a capable rider though. Wayne....

Hi all, Coming off of a no throttle condition, my engine goes through a brief "flat spot" where it nearly stalls. Advancing the throttle just a bit farther makes it suddenly 'spring' to life and it runs well from there on up to high RPMs. I thoroughly cleaned out the carburetor, even all of the little passages (all that I could find, anyway) and the bike continues to run erratic at low speeds. A possible clue: Adjusting the air mixture screw on the carb seems to make very little, if any, difference in how the engine runs. I thought perhaps the rubber insulator was leaking between the carb and block, so I tightly wrapped the joints with electrical tape--just as a test. I…

Hi, Ive got a 198b and the flywheel seems to be about half the thickness of my older 190 model. It may have been machined down but if so, its a good job as it looks 'factory' if that makes sense. Does anyone know if the 198b engine was any different than earlier models? thanks Stu

The Sherpa had a few frames during its lifetime but I have often wondered if there was a single model that handled best of all or was every model change better than that previous?

Hello chaps I'm new to the forum, so please bear with me if my request has been done before! I'm just getting back into the sport after a 20 odd year rest, hoping to do some twin shock trials and dual sport events on a 1978 Bultaco Sherpa T model 199a. What I'm after is some history on the Bultaco 350/325 sherpas, model years, specs, major change dates etc. Do the vin numbers hold any details of build spec and dates etc.? Are there any useful web sites with model details? I know the much later model 199b was a 6 speed motor an had box section swing arm but don't know much more than that. When did the color change from red to blue? Did the tank seat units ch…

Hi, Has anyone have any experience of the Butaco Sherpa Alloy Fuel Tanks currently for sale on Ebay? These are made in India just wondering what the quality is like. The pictures of them show an unfinished tank without a Fuel Cap. Any comments are welcome. Old Geezer

Hi everyone, I'm getting close to applying the decals to my tank and side panels. The sticker kit I have has some bits I'm not sure about. I've had a rummage through the undergarments of the internet but surprisingly can't find any close ups of the top of the tank. My bike is a M158. Does anyone know where the "sherpa" sticker goes? How about the "made in spain" sticker? Finally, the side cover stickers have an arrow next to the 250 text, yet all of the 158s I see photos of don't have that. I guess I should just cut that off? Cheers
