Road Legal, MOT, Insurance etc

After many conversations with DVLA/HMRC it now appears despite what the form says that you do NOT need insurance to register a trials bike for road use. You DO however, need an MOT, proof of purchase/age and when it was imported literature etc. NOW you also need it to be registered with the HMRC on their NOVA database. This cannot be done online and you have to telephone them on 0300 200 3700 for a nova1 form. I'm only putting this on here because the DVLA info is scant. Be warned that phone calls to the HMRC CAN TAKE UP TO 30 MIUTES TO BE PUT THROUGH TO THE RIGHT DEPARTMENT. I has recieved today paperwork from Beta UK which I believe is the certificate of newness (I think)? I now need to get the necessary V5 registration paperwork now for proof of ownership and insurance purposess but are not sure of the next step. Can any of you helpful TC people advise me of the procedure here? Thanks

Went to insure Gert couple of weeks ago ready for the Vic on the 3rd and realised the old gal is now 3 years old and in need of an MOT Never had a Trials bike long enough to need one so abit of problem to get sorted asap and I had no real idea what needed doing to the bike. Popped into a local bike shop to me and asked what was what, and they said a daytime MOT for a trials bike was the way to go as you dont need any lights on the bike at all even a brake one. Hi All hope somebody can help im in the process of purchasing a new evo but cannot find any insurance companies who list the evo's tried Bennetts as my rev3 is covered by them and also compare the market but no joy any ideas !!!

As title, What does it require? I have bike registered, a bolt on battery horn, a legal number plate. Insurance, Irc tyres on, brakes all good, clutch fine, Anything else? Can I take to get a pass? Ian

Hi Everyone, Just got off the phone from Carole Nash and they're saying that they won't insure any trials bike worth over 5 Grand, and the bikes got to be road registered to put it under a motorbike policy. Anyone use any other off road Insurance companies.. Thanks in advance

Will cops now start targeting road trials. Heard reports from a couple of rider's, that a cop just happen to be passing a road trial last month and he decided to pull everyone that came out the farm track on to the road. Did them for small number plates and tyres not for road use. If true, it could be the thin end of the wedge and it may give them the idea to set up outside these trials for easy money. Anyone heard about it or was it just a rumour.

can anyone tell me what is needed on a trial bike for the mot in the way of lights and horn i have a log book. but i have herd so many different stories im just confussed and dont know whats needed and whats not.thanks.

Good Morning All I have brought a Yamaha YZ250 yesterday I want to put it on road exempt enduro and get a log book for it and put it on q plate make it road legal , the last owner as put It on day time Mot which is ok so mot runs out July this year on this bike , question is will I need to register the bike with nova hmrc ? only thing ive done is filled in v55/5 form following guides on the utube that part is fine ,,,,please advise what other steps I need to do many thanks rich

Anyone here insure their bike for on the road use and theft, if so who do you insure it with and what does it cost? Mines already road registered and currently SORN. Obviously I'm not looking to actually ride it around on the road but insurance would be handy for a bit of green laning or if it ever gets stolen from my garage.

Hi, Can anyone tell me what I need to be able to (briefly) ride my new Montesa 4RT on the road. It is in the process of being road registered (7 weeks and still no sign of a V5!!!) When I last done this a long ago you needed a fork leg speedo, rear reflector and bulb horn. There will be occasions where it would be convenient to be able to ride it rather than push it.

A bit of a whimsical question really. I was watching the video of the Scottish trials and there was some main road riding between venues. I was just wondering how far a field people have been on the road, to or between trials?

Got my MOT booked for saturday on my 2007 sherco 290. Been sorting things out, got a horn (looks like something off my baby's walker), paperwork ready and done bearings as they had a little play in them, spoke to the bloke in garage and he said he'll cut me some slack with the number plate as he knows its near impossible to hang a full size one off the mudguard. But im a bit worried about tyres. Which tyres are road legal. I got dunlops that say competition use on them, so obvious these are not. anyone got info on some road legal tyres???????

I have a bike that in 99.9% sure i registered, the chap i got the bike from told me that he never recived the V5 and never chased it as he only used the bike off road, the bike has also done the scottish so there is a good chance a V5 for the bike is floating round in someones draw. As i dont know the reg number can i still apply with a V62? or is there another way to find out, i cant get dvla on the phone the are ALWAYS too busy

Has anybody done this? At the moment everything I have is insured on its frame numbers anyway but it would be nice to have a proper registration number even if it is a Q. I have had a look at DVLA information sheet INF85 and it says "You should send documentation showing the Vehicle Identifcation Number (VIN), engine number and proof of ownership with your application" I could probably in most cases find the original hand written receipts if they haven't fallen apart, but does anybody know exactly what they want? And what I can send if I can't find a receipt? It would be easy enough to take a photo of engine and frame numbers to send along with the application. …

I have a slightly technical question regarding the rules for MOTs. My bike was first registered as new in May'07, and is currently taxed I think until June'10, after which I will have to go through the hassle of getting it MOT'd in order to tax it. Does anyone know if I SORN it now, and then re-tax it before it comes up to it's 3rd birthday, then the tax disc will run for another year before I have to get it MOT'd? (e.g if I re-tax in April'10, will run to April'11 when it will be nearly 4 years old?) Reason is I only plan to keep it about a year and I'm looking for the least hassle way to extend the taxed status a bit longer. Or. legally should a vehicle over 3 years old…

Hi there, Im trying to get my bike road registered ready for the ssdt, Ive been to the dvla place to find out what i need to do. They say i need to get the bike insured off the frame and engine number first then then will register the bike. The only problem is i cant find anywere that will insure it without it been registered! I'm trying to insure my 2 bikes, and it's proving an epic. Despite getting quotes from recommended insurers (Carole Nash, Bennets, Performance Direct), it appears that when you get into the T&Cs or definitions of the policies, they either do not cover 'Trials', any road use, or competitions. So, how do people cover their bikes for off road use, with some on road transiting between sections, and for use in trials competitions? Or are people being 'artistic' with the truth?

Just phoned Carol nash to get quote for Beta Evo and they declined saying insurers dont like field/monkey bikes because they get stolen a lot. I thought thats why we insured them!; however has any body got best deal recently on TpF&theft insurance for EVo?

Dear Anyone, Apologies if this has been covered before but I've searched the forum and been all over the MOT, DOT and DVLA web sites and can't get anything that gives a clear answer. I want to ride my 1983 Sherpa T on the road. its never ever been registered so I will have to get a V5. I only want to use it during daylight hours.
