Trials Training And Technique

Riding Hints, Tips and Tricks

  1. Started by gasgasturners13,

Okay, so because of my location it means i have to travel around 1 hour 30 mins to get to the closest training grounds which on an evening is to far so i was wondering is there anything i could do in my backyard to allow me to train on evenings as well as the weekends. Bare in mind my garden isn't too big so i couldn't setup a section or anything like that but some little things to try would be great!

Sorry if this has been posted before or if it's all old hat but I found this last night - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=UYftEgz2u78&...feature=related Some of it's a bit extreme, for me anyway, but I can so identify with the 'yes, yes I CAN do this - Oh sh*t, no I can't yet', and rescuing your upside down bike from halfway up a big climb, with the back wheel gnawing your leg. Made me feel better watching someone else do it. It also makes a good comparison to some of his later vids where he's got the moves off now.

  3. Just been out for a quick pootle about in my woods...very lucky in the that respect. Been practicing very slow/stopping/start tight turns and when (it's never 'if' with me ) we go off balance, its always the inside foot that goes down. I've even tried to force myself to over balance on outside foot but my head just can't do it. ....I know the bike wants to fall 'into' the inside due to the physics, but then I should be allowing for this with my balance, but, I never over balance to the outside.

  4. I am going to TTC soon and am riding a Crf450x until I get there. Any drills I can be practicing on my bike that will help me? I was figuring stops and starts, balancing, figure eights...? Thanks for any help.

Last trip out I ventured down a dry creek bed and did a few dabs until I came to a 2ft6" to 3 ft washed away area that was a straight drop... and it was a two-footed 5 to take stock of the situation. MMMMmmmmm! I felt I might go back over front so chickened out. For me, rightly so... no need for any injury at this stage! I spent 5 mins piling rocks against the face at a 45 degree to enable me to go down the face for now and continue practicing riding rocks with minimal dabs. Remove rocks with more experience. You wouldn't believe it... as I'm moving rocks against drop-off face this voice from above says "Hey Mate!... No altering the section!!!" Thats right! My chee…

I know this has come up before in some sense, but in looking for advise to others, I am unsure! In the case of multi day trials, 2-3 or more, such as the Scottish even, IS there a preferred diatery intake, other than beer, that replenishes muscle loss and overdoing? Over the time? After first day, supper of ? to replenish for the next day? Breakfast of what? Which is best? More carbs in the eve, more protien in the morn, Pizza, beef, eggs or sausages? Something, anything? I know there must be some dietary science to this replinshment, other than beer!

So has anyone watched this? If so does it actually have some useful techniques in it or is it just a load of clips of Bou? The trailer has a lot of clips that are already on YouTube so not sure how useful it will be. I did have the Ryon Young DVD which was quite handy but lost it a few years ago. Failing that what about this: http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=111554949542 Or this http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=111569479933 .

  9. Well the title says it all.....is there a guide to not injuring myself when picking up the rear of my bike whilst getting it onto a rack??? I tend to lift the back wheel on and then lift the front wheel on.

Found a local car park where I can practice during this virus lock-down. There's a flood drain opening built in to the side of the bank just off the tarmac, the wall of which is about ~2' 6" - ish or so. Not done drop-offs from that height so here we go... Did 4 or 5 and finally landed both wheels together. Not sure why that put more force through the pegs but because I was standing too far back it jerked the front of my foot sharply upwards and I've effectively sprained my right ankle, not too bad hopefully . Left was OK thankfully. I should have learnt from watching Guy Martin's Great Escape, where he did the same, landing after a jump. Have now realised…

Hi, Whats the views on bars position, forwards or backwards? Bikes a beta evo 250, skill level sportsman/clubman. Height 5'10. Fair enough height of rider will matter. But its got to matter where bars are to how much grip you get from the rear? Watched an aussie trials video on youtube, says rule of thumb is have the bars so far forward that ends of bars are in line with angle of the forks. That is well forward! Then looking at worlds top fellas they also have the bars turned right far forward, is this due to the steepness of their sections plus the way they ride more and more on the back wheel? Cheers

Hi there, I've been practicing since May when I got my first ever bike, I've done about 5 proper club practice days at different venues, usually can do some bits of some beginner sections but I am gradually getting better. I'd really like to have at least one go at a proper trial this year, there's one coming up as a fundraiser locally badged as being a bit on the easy side and it has a beginner section. Does it matter if I get stuck and need help to get the bike out of a section ? I go a lot slower than everyone else between sections unlikely to finish the full 4 laps ! have to prop myself up on a tree to start the bike again all opinions valued !! thanks

I had a weird experience today. I had to go down a very steep grade about 4/5m tall with a short run out and got a severe calf cramp trying to stay on the rear brake. I wonder how far above the peg is considered ideal? I may need to lower my pegs as my brake pedal can't go up any more. Thank you.

Hi I have got to a point where all the obstacles where I ride are either very easy for me or to big but I also have very limited choice apart from a big mound of dirt and a few rocks I have been trying to learn double blip I can get a small amount of rear wheel lift but it just goes straight up and down no forward movement so I either get over small rocks or clatter inti them with bash plate if bigger I have watched many videos and still can't master the techniques any help and advice would be great
